Yes the whole point in the via Woodlands Road prefix was to show the trams which called there. First tram to call at Queens Road today was 3037 with a service to Ashton. The situation now is that Altrincham - Bury trams display Bury via Market Street with Ashton - Bury trams displaying Bury via Victoria these both change to Bury. I'm guessing that directs from Bury display Altrincham via Market Street and EML trams show Ashton via Victoria / Piccadilly (probably Victoria). I'm not entirely sure of destinations from bury as I don't use the line often enough to build up the usual picture.

It was previously the case that a tram leaving Droylsden would display Bury via Victoria, but leaving Bury would display Droylsden via Piccadilly. The 'via Woodland's Road' was fairly essential if you wanted Woodlands Road, because without it you would never know if the tram was going to stop there until it was too late! It did confuse people though, especially at Bury when Woodlands was open, because it would have to say 'Droylden via Woodlands Road' until arrival there, so people at Bury didn't think it was going via the City Centre. The number of confused looking people I said to "You want the tram to Manchester? Yes this one."

I haven't been on since Ashton opened unfortunately. Things change so fast without me!

Nice bit of future-proofing to add "via Market Street" at this stage. Presumably there's a "via Exchange Square" sitting somewhere in the display memory too.

Lines and stations opening all over the place reminds me that long ago, in BR days, there was talk of opening a station between Brooklands and Timperley at the end of Woodbourne Road. Nothing came of this, of course. Has this ever been considered by Metrolink? The canal cuts off a lot of potential passengers, though a footbridge would greatly increase the catchment by opening up the Walton Road area.

TFGM PRESS RELEASE - 3B OLDHAM TOWN CENTRE LINE TO OPEN 27 JAN '14

17 December 2013

Date set for Oldham’s town centre Metrolink line

Oldham’s town centre Metrolink line will be open by the end of January.

The new line has four new stops – Westwood, Oldham King Street, Oldham Central and Oldham Mumps, with the latter integrating tram and bus services and providing a new, free park and ride site for Metrolink passengers.

Last month, Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) revealed that it was working to open the line early in the New Year – several months ahead of schedule.

TfGM can now reveal that, unless adverse wintry weather conditions affect progress, it is targeting Monday 27 January for the public launch.

Connecting the new line to the network will require a weeklong closure of the existing section between Central Park and Rochdale Railway Station, and that closure is scheduled to start on Saturday 18 January. Details of the accompanying replacement bus services will be provided early in the New Year.

The closure is essential as the existing track needs to be severed from the temporary line, which passes through the Oldham tunnels, and connected to a brand new alignment through the town centre.

When the track and overhead power lines have been connected, final testing will begin and this will be followed immediately by the start of passenger services.

Councillor Andrew Fender, Chair of the TfGM Committee, said: “The arrival of Metrolink in Oldham has already been a huge success story – patronage is already double that of the former rail services – and we’re now in the final stages of completing the next chapter.

“The town centre line is a cornerstone in the rejuvenation of Oldham and has been the catalyst for some very exciting developments. I only hope the famous Oldham weather is kind enough for us to be able to get everything done in the timescales we’re working to.

“If it is and we are able to open the line at the end of January, it would be the third new Metrolink line in a row to arrive ahead of schedule – which, given the sheer scale of the work involved across the expansion, would be a truly remarkable achievement.”

Jim McMahon, Oldham Council Leader, said: “Having our new Metrolink line open will mark an important new chapter in our history and this news is an excellent early Christmas present for the borough.

“Our wide-ranging regeneration plans are designed to transform what Oldham town centre offers for residents, business and visitors alike, and these will unashamedly capitalise on the arrival of the tram.

“We fully recognise that the construction process has been hard for many people - especially businesses. Councillors Dave Hibbert and Shoab Akhtar have worked in very difficult circumstances to support them through these works and we want to thank them all for their patience.

“The biggest infrastructure project in our history meant disruption was inevitable but once the final closure is complete, and the line opens, we hope people will recognise the bigger picture and the huge benefits of a tram system that will put Oldham back on the national and international transport infrastructure map.”

The Oldham Loop Line closed to train services in October 2009 for conversion to Metrolink. More than 1.2 million journeys were made on it in its last year as a rail line – compared to more than 2.5 million in its first full year as a tram line.

The existing, temporary route between the former rail station at Werneth and Oldham Mumps will be de-commissioned by the end of spring 2014.

That will see the platforms, platform equipment, ramps, overhead power lines, rails and sleepers removed and, where appropriate, retained for use elsewhere on the network. The tunnels will be secured at each opening to prevent trespass.

So is the final day for services via the current Oldham Mumps on the Friday or the Saturday?

Good to see this kind of news - especially as we are so used to things over-running

That's impressive for a "like for like" conversion (i.e. before the extension into central Oldham)

They are getting better now, Ashton was a couple months early as was East Didsbury and so is Oldham TC (and Rochdale probably will be)

And I assume that year means from June 2012 (opened to Oldham) to June 2013 when the full loop line to Rochdale had only been open a few months! Be interesting to see figures in a few years time with all TC routes open and 6 minutes frequency to Shaw!

Probably significant that these are the routes that don't involve interfacing the new TMS to the legacy block signalling. On this basis it's quite possible that the Airport line will open early too.

Ashton via Piccadilly
Bury via Victoria.

Don't see the point in the via bit myself but hey ho.

As previously said, the bury via woodlands road and Ashton via woodlands road displays are a different code and would change automatically to the via Victoria display or just bury upon the doors being released.

I think these would be for visitors and others who are just interested in getting to the right part of the city centre and don't know or care that the trams through Victoria go to Rochdale or Bury and the ones through Piccadilly go to Ashton.

Can anyone tell me what the history is of this bridge by Holt Park station ? It obviously predates the tramway.

You can see from old-maps.co.uk that the bridge carrying Cambrian Street (formerly Gibbon Street) over the River Medlock has existed since at least the 1890s, and an extension of the street known as Holt Town used to pass under this side span.

I nearly had a heart attack this evening when, 17 minutes after everyone got cleared off 1016 doing an Eccles - MCUK - Picc run, finding the screens blank, and hitting the customer information button on the help point, I got a very cheerful 'Hello, customer services here, how can I help'. This didn't last long, immediately after asking if there was going to be a tram from anywhere on the quays towards Piccadilly, I just got hung up on. (I had a friend who'd gone over to Harbour City to see if there was going to be an Eccles - Picc direct tram, who would have held it for us at MCUK to run over, likewise if I had found out there was no tram, I'd have held a 50 for him).

I have it on good authority that T68s will make it into 2014...................with a couple being saved for a city centre shuttle whilst Victoria is being done up.
