Fans of obsolete railway stations will be upset to learn they've started tearing down Manchester Mayfield Station.

As space can be at a premium at Piccadilly could the space not be used to increse platform capacity?

Piccadilly needs through roads and the Mayfield sight could only, reasonable, be used to create terminators. Of course there are already plans afoot to create a few extra through platforms as part of the Northern Hub so the platform crunch should lessen in the next few years anyway.

For who's safety? There are only curious photographers, pigeons and miscreants that use the building, so do we really have to protect those that shouldn't be there?

Sad a bit of history bits the dust, but lets face it, its an eyesore that even in its heyday was hardly the grandest station in the land.

Is it needed for demolition for the ordsall curve project?

Nope, there will be two new platforms alongside the existing pair - in fact the extra services through the Castlefield Corridor will only exacerbate the problem with Mayfield, where terminating services would conflict with those using the through lines.

With some existing platforms at Piccadilly underutilised due to conflicts in the station throat, and tram-train services expected in the future, sadly there's no future for Mayfield as a station.

I always thought having some terminating platforms on that side of the throat might be a handy idea - especially for airport/local airport line terminators to supplement frequencies. Then not everything would need to go through the two-track section. A mirror of the Oxford Road terminators, in some ways.

But P15/16 will make a huge difference. I wonder if the island could be wide enough to sport a 6/8-car bay at its eastern end?

There's at least one regular poster here in RailUK (not me BTW) who's absolutely convinced that P15/16 is impossible to fit in the space available, even without a bay!

Planning permission for the demolition of the roof and supports was given in November. The applicant was BRB (Residuary).

Would BRB (Residuary) be forthcoming with news of what is planned for the site of Manchester Mayfield railway station ?

Could the roof had been in such a poor condition that certain wind and weather conditions have made it a danger to the users of the surrounding roads?

The contractors had a large mechanised unit working on the removal the roof sections earlier today when our train to Manchester Piccadilly passed by.

As been said decision was taken last year by BRB(r) to demolish the roof as it was falling down, theres also been suggestions of asbestos though ive not seen that in officiall documents. This year its been decided that Manchester International Festival will use the Mayfield site as well (because of site being made safe not vice versa).

The problem is that with the Northern Hub there will be more trains through the Castlefield Corridor with most continuing through the congested 6-track approach east of Piccadilly to the airport etc.

However conflicts between these services and those using the trainshed to the north will be reduced, producing extra capacity there for services from the east. There just isn't the capacity, or the need, to use Mayfield.

How much will have to be spent on Manchester Mayfield to allow this to be used as a venue for the Manchester International Festival, not just making it meet the approved standards of the HSE but also for any aesthetic refurbishments required ?

I think the point is that it's being used as a venue due to its existing condition, rather than bringing it up to Bridgewater Hall standard just for the MIF.

I decided to be a curious photographer one day, but couldn't find a way in at all. How did anyone get in to get pictures?

Whatever the reason for this demolition - goodbye and good riddance ! heritage it was not.
Oh, it was heritage. Heritage isn't always good-looking though (it normally is, but from what I could see from the outside* Mayfield is one of the exceptions, it really isn't nice to look at at all). Mind you, what I think is supposed to be the main enterance of Piccadilly is even worse, looks more like a modern shopping centre than a station. It was rather a shock to see demolision work underway at Mayfield though.

* The inside may be a different story. This photograph makes it look interesting.

It would seem to me that, with Mayfield out of the way, that space (and the approach viaduct that led into it) could be used for through platforms (maybe even four of them, on two islands). Draw a straight line accross the Mayfield approach viaduct and extend it and it meets the existing line near the Oxford Road end of the current Manchester Piccadilly through platforms.

That's already being dealt with as part of the Northern Hub, with a further two through platforms built alongside the existing pair. There's really no need to use Mayfield.

That detailed designs have not yet been released for, they may indeed make use of the Mayfeild Approaches in some way...

Will the new Manchester Piccadilly platforms 15 and 16 have tracks that will impinge on part of the existing former track area approaches to Manchester Mayfield railway station ?

No idea, I havn't even see the design specification for the platforms visa vie length, width, access etc.

If they go for the most futureproofed plan then I can see encroaching onto the old approaches at Mayfeild, but it's almost definately doing to take up some of the old signalling centre that is now concreted over.

Futureproofed:
Two new platforms with a new concourse access from the current main concourse, step free by ramped moving walkways, fixed stairways provided and lift intergration with the current main mesamine, sorry costa coffee, you're going. Semi segregated entry/exit flows onto 13, 14, 15, 16.

Provision to be put into place for bay platforms between the new through platforms (if not completed at construction stage) for terminating services from either direction, either as part of the service pattern (stoppers on the CLC).
Alternatively headshunt sidings between the US and DS with independant access from 14 & 15 for turning services short of MIA / SPT. This would proberbly be less expensive and better for passenger flow, but one would need to throw detrainment staff out for busy times.

That'll be me.

I've looked at the NR maps/proposals on this, and can't say it's lifted my doubt. It'll be exceptionally tight, and I hope the Macdonald hotel doesn't mind losing a swathe of rooms...
