I was due to travel from Manchester Piccadily to London today via Sheffield but as the Manchester - Sheffield route was cancelled I decided not to travel.

Could anybody advise me how I could have got to London if it was absolutely essential? I travel this route once a week so it would be good to know for next week. Does anyone know if I would have been allowed on the Virgin Manchester Picc - Euston? I'm guessing not.

I had the following ticket:

Manchester - London (Advance ticket, Route: AP EMT & Connect. Booked train only.)

Reservations on

9.20 Manchester Piccadilly - Sheffield (Trans-Pennine Express Trains)
10.27 Sheffiled - London St Pancras (East Midlands Trains)

Thanks.

EMT are duty bound to get you from Manchester to London - it is likely they will authorise travel on VT, obviously without reservations. Give them a call.

On the ticket you held, technically speaking your couldn't have used Virgin as with that ticket you have to travel on the trains specified otherwise your ticket is invalid. However with conditions as they are if you asked the guard of a Virgin service before boarding if you could travel they may use discretion and allow you travel on their service.

Is that purely based on the guard's sense of fairness?

There is no answer at EMT. I'm not travelling today but it would be good to know what to do for the future. I am on this route every Wednesday morning.

If you have to travel, the best thing to do would be to turn up to Piccadilly plenty of time in advance and enquire each time. It might be the case that sometimes you'll be expected to use a Rail Replacement bus for all or part of your journey, although today it's hard to see how they'd get a bus across the Pennines.
