If you want to go out via Carnforth and back via Leeds, then a £31.80 Manchester to Giggleswick anytime return would seem to cover you. Effectively, you start your return journey at Giggleswick, and then break it at Hellifield.

Thanks. Depending on connections, does this £31.80 fare also work in the opposite direction; i.e. outward via Leeds, return via Carnforth?

Yes, logically.

Or you can wait for another of those Northern £10 day ticket offers and choose your trains carefully.

The Northern £10 day tickets are available at the moment, the last day for travel is 21/11. It might be difficult finding the tokens now though, it's several weeks since they were published.
