Manchester-Derby Routing Query

I've never done this before and was wondering what routes are available to me for travelling from Manchester-Derby, I know the obvious via Sheffield but am I right in thinking that via Stoke-On-Trent is valid aswell, also is via Sheffield and Nottingham Valid aswell?

Yes, all these seem to work with Any Permitted walk-up tickets (eg off-peak returns).
You can also travel via Crewe and Stoke, and also via Tamworth.
These are unusually generous route options.

Advances are "XC/EMT and Connections", but they all seem to be routed via Chesterfield, despite an XC/EMT service being available via Stoke.

Yes, all of those routes are fine. If travelling via Stoke it's cheaper to split tickets there, especially if you can commit to a £3 Northern advance or a slightly more expensive XC advance.

Similarly, if you want a daytrip from Manchester to Leicester, it is generally cheaper to go via Stoke & Derby and split your ticket at Uttoxeter.

Be thankful there are some Advances now. They're new. For some reason there are still no East Midlands Only or (more optimistically, although the current ones nearly serve this) East Midlands & Connections ones.

I did look for cheaper fares from Stockport to Leicester on East Midlands Trains only. I accepted the likelihood of a longer wait at Sheffield or a need to go via Nottingham, without success.

You may be more likely to achieve this if you split at Sheffield.
