Manchester Day Ranger validity

Not a dispute as such as i never encountered one.
A few days ago i decided to purchase the Day Ranger to use around Manchester. It costs £4.80 and valid for rail services PLUS use on trams only in the city extending to Deansgate and Victoria. Upon buying the ticket at the Piccadilly ticket office i was informed that it was not valid on any tram services and would need to buy the tram/train ticket that costs £7.50. I could not convince the seller of the Day Ranger validity so i bought it anyway and went on my way. I then decided to ask 2 gateline staff if i could use this ticket on the city zone trams. One did not know and referred me to his colleague who sincerely said no and i needed the tram/train ticket (£7.50).
At Piccadilly Gardens i decided to ask the person inside the Metrolink info office itself and initially he said no but upon checking his system he found that it was valid.
To me this seems a simple ticket to understand but it causes confusion.
Has anyone else had problems with this?

Might be worth emailing Virgin Trains (customer.relations@virgintrains.co.uk) as they run the ticket office at Piccadilly so they can brief staff.

As for the G4S barrier staff, they haven't got a clue anyway!

I know it is hardly the responsibility of the customer to convince retail staff that they chosen ticket is valid for the journey(s) they wish to undertake, but sadly it seems to be the case. Sometimes I have the conditions loaded up from NRE on my phone to show the ticket office staff if I'm asking for something, err, interesting... Maybe worth doing the same if you wish to persuade staff to your point of view.

Or just buy it anyway and not mention anything else of your travel plans.

i work in Manchester and i get the train into manchester and as far as i am aware you can use your train ticket in the city zone as long as your ticket says ctz next to station on the ticket.

That is correct.
I was under the impression that tickets to Manchester CTLZ (Manchester Central Zone) include a single tram journey within the central zone per direction, analogous to London U1*.

A Day Ranger would include unlimited travel in the area in which it is valid. It is a different type of product completely, and as such doesn't contain the letters CTLZ.

Metrolink have posters which tell you what tickets are valid for city centre travel and other ticket information. Perhaps this is one instance where its better to look at posters than ask human beings.

Never actually used this particular ticket, but I have used the similar Train + Bus ticket many times, and that is undoubtedly valid on Metrolink in the Central Zone. [ Have had ticket checked on Metrolink and never had any problems ]

TfGM's publicity suggests the Day Ranger *should* say CTLZ on it and that all such tickets are valid for unlimited travel on central area trams.

I'm afraid it's a while since I bought one but I've used them many times as I used to live a bus ride from Littlebrough.

The leaflet does have a better map!

I have always given the advice that the ranger is valid on city zone trams only and never been quiried so I assume I am right lol
