Now I am aware that there is a station called ashburys near by. Plus the metrolink extension to Sportcity and Droylesden.

But i have noticed that there is a railway line that passes manchester city football ground, i believe this is freight only, but im not knowledgeable about lines in manchester.

Could there be a possibility of a halt there for matchday use only.

like manchester united have.

The line isn't adjacent so won't be able to have a direct connection into the ground.

I'm sure if Manchester City's wealthy owner offers to pay for it, it could be done. ;)

If you go behind Piccadilly station, you will see that there are now tracks coming out of the station undercroft and towards Ashton New Road. Between that and track preparation works along the route, I think that is as far as they have got so far on that route. On the southern extensions, if you take a tram to Trafford Bar, you will see a huge amount of earthwork and new tracks snaking off - that is going to be a new tram depot and is the connection to the new Chorlton line.

Its actually very nice seeing something new getting built up here - i.e. a Metrolink extension that is not simply a conversion of a heavy rail line but genuine new build (admittedly along a disused 1960's rail corridor, but still counts as new in my book). Can't wait for the Didsbury extension to be open, so people can travel along the old Midland route to Manchester Central (well GMex) once more :)

Actually, they renamed it back to Manchester Central to be inkeeping with the railway history :)

Yes, indeed I know, but the tram stop is still called GMEX - I wish they would change that. Though catching a tram to Manchester Central hasn't got quite the same class as catching say, the Blue Pullman back in the Great Central Railway Days. I guess it is kept as GMEX so as not to confuse people, having a tram stop called Manchester Central, that isn't central, would perhaps cause confusion?

If they're not too fussy about renaming GMEX they probably wouldn't spell Droylsden correctly either!
