Manchester advice

Sorry for the very last minute request but can anyone advise me.

My wife and daughter are travelling from Chesterfield - Manchester tomorrow using a F&F railcard. They need to get to Manchester Victoria for the arena there and so have to cross Manchester. My question:-

Can they ask for a through ticket CHD - Victoria for use on the tram or should they get a CHD - Piccadilly and buy a separate tram ticket?

Your ticket would be issued to "Manchester Stations" rather than a specific station, and does not include any tram validity as far as I am aware.

Agreed, and Victoria Metrolink Station is closed at the moment anyway. But you can still travel to Shudehill which is a short walk to the arena, but perversely you will have to change trams as there is no direct service between Piccadilly and Shudehill, (and it's actually quicker to walk from Piccadilly Gardens to Market Street rather than travel via St Peters Square - see attached map for an explanation!). You will need to buy a separate ticket, easy enough to do from the machines on the Metrolink platform at Piccadilly.

Just to mention that there are currently no trams from Piccadilly to Victoria (until November). They could board an Altrincham/Eccles/Media City tram at Piccadilly (the tram is in the basement), change at St Peter's Square, cross to the opposite platform and catch a Bury or Rochdale tram (both every 12 minutes) to Shudehill then a 5-minute walk to Victoria. Trams are not currently stopping at Victoria while they rebuild the Metrolink station.

Free buses run from the front of the station to various parts of the city, also from Oxford Rd which is definitely included on a Man Stations ticket and is served by the train from Chesterfield.

Depending on How long they have got to go from Piccadilly to Victoria they could always walk , its about a 15 to 20 minute walk .With no services between pic and vic currently and the requirement to change on the tram its not going to be much quicker on the tram

One of the free busses from outside Picadilly will also take them about a 5 minute walk from victoria or go to oxford road and the number 2 will take them right outside Victoria


and they could stop for a coffee or do some window shopping in the arndale centre in the time between .

add an F&F railcard - fare is no longer available. (No Railcard discounts on Metrolink)

....so it's far cheaper to buy a train and a separate tram ticket.

As is mentioned, there is no current direct service Piccadilly to Shudehill (200yds from the Arena) and passengers should catch any tram to St Peters Square and cross to the opposite platform for a Bury or Rochdale tram.

Walking it from Piccadilly is an option (10 minutes)or using the free Number 1 Metroshuttle bus from Piccadilly station approach, drops off at Marks and Spencers, 3 minutes from the arena.
