for SWT it depends.
they watch you carefully from day one to see what you are like as a person.
Then if you do fail one of the exams they make a decision based on you as a person.
For example if I go in everyday, don't make much effort and muck around all day then they may say goodbye and good luck.
But (and this is what you should be doing anyway) you concentrate and work hard and join in discussions then they will take you to one side have a chat and discuss where you went wrong.
they really dont want you to fail any part of the course but at the same time they dont want someone who isnt concentrating who they have to pay and will probably turn out to be a rubbish driver!!

They are not exams as you know them they are assessments of your knowledge on the specific parts of the training - nobody fails they are known as not yet competent, if you mess up the rules you will be given some extra tuition on the sections you were not competent in.

With SWT you get two chances with all of the assessments so you get two chances at your rules final papers, two chances with your ARL, two chances with traction assessments however if you failed you 455 first time then passed but failed your desiro's it is then upto the head of training and your manager to decide if you can retake them or not and you get two chances at your Driver Final.
With the modular assessments during the rules course depending on your results depends on what happens next. If you get between 85-100% then it's a simple pass and you just need to note the place where you need work, if you get between 75-85% then you are asked verbally the questions again and you will get further help with the rest of the rules course, if you get below 75% then you are required to see the head of the training centre and have a discussion with him and your depot/driver manager as to where you went wrong and it is then the head of trainings decision if you can continue with the course.
I can't say for any other TOC's but I was a Guard with SWT and when I took the jump and went up to Driver again for SWT and whilst training my wages took a drop.

Ive heard that route learning takes a long time. One told me that it could take up to a year, even after exam... I think that sounds a bit wierd. I can see some has written 1 or 2 weeks of training, but hopefully there are no routes taking up to a year of learning?

Route learning can vary from depot to depot depending on what link you'll be in, what depots and sidings you'll sign and it also depends on how quickly you can pick up the routes. I think the longest it takes is 6 months under normal circumstance at the bigger depots such as Waterlo and Wimbledon park as they sign a lot of route but this can depend as I said on how quickly you pick up the route as well as how much effort you put in to doing the routes, if you get any refusals and how long it takes to get an assessment.
All the toc's I have been involved in have to keep your wages as they are - if you are training as a tra9inee driver you should be paid the guards salary for the duration of the training.

It would take a year to learn most of the country - what usually happens is the trainee driver will learn the core routes whilst doing their 225 hours with the DI and then pass out on the route on your final driver pass out assessment, most depots have links and as a new driver you will go into the starter link, this will cover just the core route (s) so you won't be road learning for long if at all

Sorry you didn't get through. Gutted for you as you had got so far. Got an email today to say I had been successful at interview but that there weren't any positions at present so I'm back or shortlisting again. Hoping something comes up soon!
I had a call from the Train company today, They gave me good feed back.
They said that overall I had a very good interview, however I missed out on the job by 2 points! FFS!
They score each question they ask. I needed 30 points but at the end of my interview I had 28.
He has told me that he thinks I should re-apply when they start their next campaign in a few months so I may get another shot yet.

Hi mar_k, sorry to here you missed out, my application is still on hold I applied early November, and after reading some posts on this forum I am not liking my chances now. You say that they said you should re apply in a few months, but is it not the TOC's policy that you cannot reapply for a position for 6 months?
The 6mths starts from your original application I was told by the HR Team.
Also they told me they will be starting the process again in 5 mths so I would be more than ok.
Definitely re-apply! You've done the hardest bit.
