Put this way, some HR works quicker than others, my whole application from submission to end interview for one company was 6 weeks, hear back from them this week from an assessment centre last friday, and for another company, naming no names, big one, run's railtrack's old network, has so far taken 17 weeks and only just sent me the 2nd round of phycometric testing...

The TOC I'm employed by took 29 days from the vacancy closing to day 1 of training.
A certain other TOC took 4 months to respond to the initial application, then after an assessment, invited to travel the length of the country to attend an interview which didn't exist. Their HR had a very nasty letter written to them, and I won't apply with them again on principal.
Long story short - it varies!

Although you could ring them, it is unlikely to make them speed up.
mar_k, I think you mentioned before yours was with FCC? I had mine a week last Wednesday and am still waiting to hear back on the interview. When I rang FCC (this Wednesday) they said they still hadn't been sent out by the OPC yet and that it would take around two days to let everyone know once they were received.

Does anyone know how long it takes to hear from FGW after interview. its been a week.
Read what it says above - there is no definitive answer.

Hi mar_k. If you search the threads the answers will be there for you. Essentially, these will be situational questions based on your responses on your application form (or just explanations of how you have coped under pressure etc.) Have a good search through the threads and good luck! Oh, and important to know about the company of course. I reviewed everything on the website I could about my TOC and they seemed impressed with my knowledge. If I'd looked harder I could have found out more, I'm sure., but a simple review of their website was sufficient for me.

Shouldn't be anywhere near as tough as the structured interview if my experience was anything to go by. Questions were based on situational examples I'd given in my application but for one or 2 I mentioned that I'd thought of better examples and they were happy to discuss these. Good luck!
The Manager interview is an opportunity to discuss what you know about the TOC and explain how you have acted in different situations such as giving great customer service, using problem solving and decision making skills. The Structured Interview focuses more on situations where you have experienced specific problems and how you reacted to them e.g. demonstrating how you cope under pressure. For Northern, the Manager's interview came first and the structured interview last.
The structured interview you have to answer questions (5 if I remember rightly) on a form and then you get grilled on your answers and asked for more detail ( I say grilled as in my structured interview the interviewer came across as really harsh, but I guess that is to get the most out of the questions).

From what I read its about 12 weeks classroom-based, about 4-6 weeks on sidings learning traction, 3 weeks or so of "shadowing" and about 12 weeks of practical handling [not in this order] before getting "passed out" but after this you might still have to learn more new routes

Mine went like this when I started..
1 week - Corporate induction
1 week - Front end turns
1 week - PTS (Personal track safety)
12 weeks - Rules
5 weeks - Traction
1 week - Priciples of route learning/Route Risks
1 week - Final Rules exam and simulator runs.
36 weeks - With a minder driving which took me up to my 225 hours. Including dark hours/Annual Leave, this time frame varys depending on what diagrams you do etc. Mine was in summer also, getting dark hours was hard so I had to keep driving until I reached the required amount.
Hope this helps! Obviously each TOC varys but it was just over a year from start day, to my first driving turn on my own.

as a trainee driver for SWT you'll do
1 week corprate welcome
10 days basic rail and PTS
1 week front end turns (you ride in the frint cab with a driver for a week to get used to the cab enviroment and job length).
1 week Principles of route learning (the simulator).
6 weeks of rules which include days out (at signal boxes and visits to depots) having modular exams at the end of wach week and finishing with a final exam of arouns 276 questions covering everything you've done over the past 6 weeks.
1 week of basic traction (you learn the basics of the SWT fleet)
1 week of low speed moves where you drive each traction at 5 mph in clapham yard.
3 weeks practical train handling (here you drive a mix of ECS trains and passenger trains under the instruction of the assessors at the training centre).
5-7 weeks with an insructor driver making up hours driving in day, night, weekdays and weekends
1 week Advanced Route Learning you have to learn the route between clapham jct and woking then have an assessment on it.
2 weeks 455 traction (if applicable to your depot if not then continue with instructor driver)
2 weeks Desiro traction
1 week 458 traction (if applicable to your depot if not you continue with a instructor driver)
you then go back to depot to finish off your driving hours until you have done 225 hours driving with a mix of day and night driving and 3 step braked (158/159/455) trains and PBC trains (444/450/458).
you then get a 5 day final covering everything you've done since starting, if you pass this then you start your route learning.
