Back in the nineties I used to joke that weekends were a management free zone. Many clearly stayed at home or went out by car at weekends and it was certainly news to them that trains were packed. One boss seemed to have trouble to grasp that people might take day trips by train on Sunday. Hopefully things are better now.

Not so - spent a lot of weekends "out on the patch" - and my on call managers were encouraged to get out and about ..........(and this after a week's solid work for self and other managers) ......

The occasion mentioned in #46 of an Area Manager preparing to open up Single Line Working was on a Sunday lunchtime. He was out with his family, dropped in at a box, found out was happening and started the SLW process in order to hold the fort until a relief signalman arrived. His family just had to sit in the car, although he shouldn’t have been that long.

Not by judging by what some of my TOC management have said to me recently. They still dont believe trains are packed and dont appear to realise that split tickets at Chester Le Street or Northallerton makes the tickets significantly cheaper….
