A 24-year-old football fan dressed as a sheep suffered serious burns to his arms and legs when he was set alight on a train in Fife.

Aberdeen fans said the man ran through the carriage on fire as others threw beer on him to douse the flames.

The Edinburgh to Aberdeen service was stopped at Kirkaldy at about 1900 GMT to allow the man to be treated.

British Transport Police said one man was arrested and another was assisting the police with their inquiries.

A second man is reported to have suffered slight injuries.

The train was carrying Aberdeen football supporters back home after their side's match again Hibs in Edinburgh.

It is understood a number of the fans at the match and on the train were dressed as sheep.

The train involved, an Arriva cross-country train was the 1808 GMT service from Edinburgh to Aberdeen.

A British Transport Police spokesman said: "British Transport Police can confirm that a male has been arrested and another is assisting with enquiries following a serious incident on board a train in the Kirkcaldy area of Fife at around 1900 hours yesterday."

The spokesman added: "British Transport Police are treating the incident very seriously and investigations are currently ongoing."

A following Fife loop service along with NXEC's 1F23 to Aberdeen were delayed by around 90 minutes behind the Voyager, but other services were able to be diverted via Dunfermline.

I have actually seen rail enthusiasts behave worst then football fans, so dont cast us all in the same box. You could say at least you dont see football fans running across running lines and vieing for the best spot to take a picture, even if it means you putting yourself in danger. I have seen this on numerous occasions.

Both football fans and rail enthusiasts have their minority who spoil it for the majority.

Thats correct it was on a SouthEastern service and it was a polish woman if I am correct and chavs set her hair on fire which is out of order.

It was a man, if memory serves, but yes it happened at Durrington. I'm a little surprised at the reputation the West Coastway has as well, while there may be some horrible areas served by the line I haven't really seen any trouble on trains and stations on the line, even late on Friday and Saturday nights.

I quite agree - and I am sure Sir Alex Ferguson did not mean that every match was like the one to which the original quote referred. But dressing up as an inflamable sheep, and then travelling a long distance by public transport so dressed. is not the act of your average rational person.

To be fair, you can't deny that we have the highest levels of alcohol consumption and the highest levels of alcohol related violence in Europe. But we're not that much worse than England and Wales

Yes really. The fact that the woman was Polish may have been included as an aide memoire for those that can remember many incidents through their discussions or careers. There was no mention that the incident was racially motivated.

On reflection, I doubt that West Coastway chavs have any comprehension of racial discrimination, it would be "because you are different". It could have been because this woman wore a pink hat.

Im 75% scottish and know my own country (Scotland) is not the best place in the world but the same could be said for London.....

Anyway I mentioned a polish woman earlier in this thread as I was explaining to Mojo who was involved in a incident on a SouthEastern service earlier this year when I mentioned the polish woman it was not racially motivated and I was only trying to explain who was involved and I was only trying to explain that the person was a polish woman who was a tourist nothing else.

Its an interesting issue. When football is on, fSCR and BTP ban alcohol being taken onto or sold on trains between the two locations pre and post game. This is not applied to XC or NXEC services -0 I assume because of the difficulty involved in passengers boarding ear;lier in the journey.
