A MAN became impaled on metal railings in a freak accident and had to be cut down by firefighters.

The casualty in his 40s was rushed to Wrexham Maelor by ambulance, with part of the railings still inside his head.

The incident happened at Gwersyllt train station in Wrexham at around 4.50am on Saturday morning.

The man’s condition was described as serious.



Yesterday, there was still police tape attached to the blue railings and the missing sections of metal had been boarded up with roughly one metre wide panel of wood.

The area is near the Gwersyllt sign where the railings are erected in front of a breeze block wall belonging to a building merchant’s yard.


Police said they are not treating the incident as suspicious.

A North Wales Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said: “We were called at 4.54am to assist a male casualty at Gwersyllt railway station.

“Crews used cutting equipment to remove him from railings, along with a section of railing.

“He was taken to hospital by ambulance.”

A Welsh Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: “We were called at 4.49am to Gwersyllt Railway Station.

“We sent a paramedic in a rapid response vehicle, an emergency ambulance, a BASICS doctor and an ambulance officer to the scene, and a man in his 40s with a head injury was taken to Wrexham Maelor Hospital.”

A British Transport Police spokesman said: “At 5.17am on Saturday, February 22, we received a report that a male had been injured on some fencing at Gwersyllt railway station in Wrexham.

“We attended the scene together with North Wales Police, the local fire service and the ambulance service.

“The male was subsequently taken to hospital and is receiving treatment for his injuries.

“The incident is not being treated as suspicious.”

A MAN found impaled on railings at a train station was taken off a life-support machine last night.

Marlon Poole, 38, now living in Shotton but with strong connections to Wrexham, is still fighting for his life in a hospital specialist unit in Stoke-on-Trent after being found at Gwersyllt railway station.

It is believed Mr Poole, a leading hand at Tata Steelworks on Deeside, had attended a celebration at the Crown Inn in Summerhill, Wrexham, to mark what would have been the birthday of Lee Davies, who lost his life in the last few months.

Mr Poole's father, Stewart Poole, 70, from Little Acton, Wrexham, said last night it was unclear what had happened but he imagined his son would have been making his way home to Shotton via Gwersyllt railway station.

A less judgemental guess would be that he was taking a shortcut over a fence and fell onto the railings beneath. Hope the chap pulls through.

I feel sorry for him and wish him a speedy recovery...but I can't help but wonder what on earth he was doing?!
