Not sure if this is slightly off-topic for this forum, apologies if so. Can anyone suggest a list of routes for this fare? I.e. anything other than directly with XC.

There aren't many variations. Essentially it will boil down to either via Birmingham then Worcester or direct to Cheltenham, or via Crewe, Shrewsbury, Hereford and Newport.
You can take a slight detour via Warrington, but that's about it.
