Has anyone any experience of this combined package that seems to be a new package?

I run an entirely Mac system of iMac/iPad/iPhone, started way back in 1993. In all that time Ive never suffrered from trojans, viruses, malware etc and I dont run any anti virus software either. The trick is to be super careful about where you go on the net, to always run OS and iOS updates and to be very security aware.

I did at one time subscribe to Norton, which some reviewers consider superior to Malware Bytes, however it was glitchy, unreliable and a cost I just didn’t need.

However, my understanding is that PC and Android systems are more prone to attack than Macs so if your system is one of these it might be be helpful.

On my computer Windows Defender turned itself off permanently to annoy me. As I use a Vista, and newer models of Windows don't allow my programs or games to work, so I need to keep the old system.
All Windows Defender does now is spam me every time I turn on saying how rubbish Microsoft is at customer service. Imagine if Ford cars had airbags that no longer worked if a new car was released.

While I can't answer for Joe, I have some games which don't work on my W7E computer: Minesweeper, Freecell, Columns... Fortunately Pinball still works!

As far as I can see, the only difference between Malwarebytes Premium and Premium + Privacy is that the latter includes a VPN (virtual private network) facility. Is that something that you really need?

I seem to recall that you asked a question before about another anti-virus program (Norton?). I'd be cautious about overloading your computer with such programs.

Unless you are visiting seriously dodgy sites, downloading all sorts of crap, clicking on every stupid link on facebook and are incapable of spotting junk spam e-mails there is no reason to pay for any malware/virus protection.

The free version of malwarebytes and a single free anti-virus app is more than enough for most people, loading up with these bloated pay versions will probably do more harm to your system than 99% of the bad stuff they claim to protect you from.

Correct on the Minesweeper

Locomotion, Grand Theft Auto 3, Master of Orion 2, Freelancer, Fable The Lost Chapters, Civilization 3 Complete, Sid Meier's Pirates, Sim City 2000, Star Wars Battlefront and Knights of the Old Republic, Railroad Tycoon 3, Neverwinter Nights, Birth of the Federation, Sims 2, and my Gamemaker8 games I made (You can't get Gamemaker8 anymore).

My brother has a new Windows and none of the above work on his, at least work well.
Windows also seems to dislike .exe files on the newest ones.

I go on-line, for social media, Newsnow, Railforums, Humber Transport Blog, Ex Astris Scientia, Stagecoach, Image searches but I never click on the links, and some other sites I have always use and know are safe.

An alternative solution to keeping an ageing PC with old operating system is to install a virtual machine that emulates the required OS on your current PC.

That used to be the case, but generally these days all platforms are about as likely to be attacked as each other.

Strictly speaking, no. Any antivirus software should be considered a last line of defence rather than a first. Good safety practice will always be the most important thing you can do - think before you click!

What exactly does Windows Defender actually offer protection against in comparison with other products.

In numerous tests, Windows Defender scores at or about the same level as most of the top providers (AVG, Avast, McAfee, etc.) For example here (https://www.av-test.org/en/antivirus/home-windows/) it scores 6/6 across the board the same as the usual suspects.
