BBC News said:
Overheated men and boys in the UK and Europe are defying dress codes by wearing skirts.

Bus drivers in France are among those who have been coping with soaring temperatures by ditching their trousers.

After finding it too hot to work in full-length leg wear, members of the CFDT Semitan Union in Nantes got around the no-shorts-to-work policy by wearing skirts.

The drivers told the local Presse Ocean news site they envied women who were able to wear skirts in the heat wave, and the video of their story has been viewed more than 160,000 times in two days.

I wonder if Mick Cash is going to call for UK drivers to do the same? ;)

There really should be a summer and winter uniform option. Wearing the same thick trousers in summer as you do in winter, in a hot cab with no aircon is really not on.

There really shouldn't be different gender dress codes for any role. This sort of nonsense needs to be done away with. This is a serious issue, and it's all about equality.

... or cab air-conditioning? In my opinion, safety is better enhanced by a temperature-controlled working environment rather than legs bare on the shins.

I think buses don't have in-cab air con as most of the time the huge sliding window does a better job. Don't forget that in England our weather about 350 days of the year is cool enough to warrant just an open window or a heater to be turned on. I know the drivers with Faresaver are allowed to wear whatever they want to keep them comfortable with the weather as long as they have a shirt and look fairly smart.

Women successfully campaigned to be allowed to wear trousers but that didn't come at the price of having to wear trousers.

Technically for equality the permitted items of clothing should be the same for both men and women but I imagine most people would be happiest with women having a choice of skirt or trousers and men having a choice of shorts or trousers.

There's also another story of a man turning up for work in a dress as a protest and then being told he could wear shorts on condition that they are 3/4 length. Really that's unfair unless the women must wear skirts or dresses that end below the knee.

Postmen these days seem to wear shorts all the time, even in freezing winter weather. Just because you can do something doesn't mean that you have to!

If they're like the ones in my town they have a bet over who can keep wearing shorts for the longest.

Make life easy, give all three options to both.

I don't disagree with you on that. The issue her eis equality, though, and that should apply whether there is a temperature controlled environment in the cab or not.

It's not a question of what people are happy with. It's a question of equality, legality and fairness.

Exactly my point. The rules should be the same for all genders.

I find this a bit weird as well. The fact remains though that driving a bus is a rather more sedentary role than delivering the mail.

Exactly. All employees should be given the option of wearing trousers, a skirt or shorts. Any rules regarding length, colour etc should apply to all.

Did anyone see the story about the school kids from Exeter that decided it was so hot on Monday/Tuesday that they were going to go to school wearing skirts?
Our oldest went to that school (Isca) for a bit and it was right next to where I lived ten years ago and we've got friends that still live there.

Yesterday my other half was driving through the estate by the school and saw a lad in full uniform but with a skirt on. It wasn't that hot yesterday though.
Maybe this will be a turning point in the wearing of skirts for men? The school skirt is a pale grey tartan so it looks a bit kiltish too...

I hadn't read your post but yes that was the biggest story in Exeter this week. ;)
