Watching the latest Portillo travels this week, I was impressed by the upgraded West Coast railway, I remember travelling on a slow single track railway (typical of much of the region) and now much of it is an electrified and twin track railway operated by modern EMUs

And as we speak, this is getting extended down to the border with Singapore. But I don't believe they intend to also electrify the jungle line.

Yes, they showed a brief footage of the double tracking and upgrade work going on

The jungle line is quite a niche railway, when compared to the west coast line which is part of the desired route from Singapore to China

Actually to the border or to Johor? I thought the likelihood was that it'd be truncated to Johor with Woodlands closed, and some form of LRT replacing it across the border itself, removing the need for a separate facility? Though the (poorly timed) shuttle trains still I believe are popular.

I've long fancied a ride on the Jungle Line, really should get round to it before it ends up closed. I've done KL-Singapore on the old one, Butterworth-KL was closed for rebuilding when I did it.

Another notable thing of the time was the Class 323-derived units on the KL area locals. If I recall rightly they even had Regional Railways "colour squares on grey" moquette at the time, though the remaining examples now have blue vinyl.

The current (new since a few yrs) JB big stesyen is integrated in the giant border-check facility (must be one of the most used in this world-similar to between HKG and mainland CHina in normal days without Corona). The land under the tracks in SIN is (what I somehow remember) owned by the Malay KTMB or maybe even the Malay govmt.-hence they could make a very big profit when they sold off the old SIN stesyen and line into it.
There are long-term plans to extend SINś MRT also over or beside the causeway into JB this would obviously remove the need for this last short sector and the shuttletrains. Maybe the big loss in revenue (paying MYR and not SID, but same amounts in nr) whereas all costs are in SID, has a role.
The old JB stesyen building was till standing (empty) when I recalled-but may have chnaged, its now a few yrs ago since I was there last. Probably some kind of listed status or so.
On skyscrapercity (strange name, but also has a very big railway section on latest news, building etc. on trains on rails in this world) there is a recent report on the double tracking and electrification of the last sector south of Gemas. Looks like a complete rebuild.
There are all kind of rumours and debates as KTMB also plans to build a direct link from KUL into the east-coast, also linking up to a few bigger cities there still without trains, avoiding the large loop via Gemas to reach it.
Ie done that east coast rwy a few times-overnight, and a few short sections daytime-IMHO grossly overstated as to the assumed jungleness. But if youve never ever seen or been into ´jungle´ it might be interesting. The short local all-stops are a living museum (or dump?) of the last remaining KTMB old stock.

I hadn't realised that when the line to Singapore's Tanjong Pagar station was closed, through trains from KL now terminate at Johor, with just a shuttle service to Woodlands, a pretty unattractive arrangement which will happily be replaced the connection from Johor to the Singapore MRT system

The old Singapore station has been preserved, and the old railway line is now a greenway walk, as with lots of our disused railways!

Does anyone know why this is the case? It's not like this bit has got the wires yet. It makes no sense at all to me.
