Have any of you well travelled folk used the east coast shuttle trains in Malaysia?

I am mulling over a trip from Jerantut to Tanah Merah (for the Perhentian Island) using daytime trains rather than bus. This journey would involve a change at Kuala Lipis with a 23 minute connection. Of course I’m concerned that this is a reasonable cushion.

While online searches seem to suggest that Malaysian railways are generally pretty reliable and punctual, i wonder if anyone has any real experience of this, and would be happy to share it on here on the forum.

I am aware that there is the Express sleeper service which operates directly, but I’d like to be able to see the Jungle pass by outside my window.

I travelled in Malaysia last year but South of Kuala Lumpur as headed into Singapore so can't comment on other sections.
All trains were on time and long distance trains seen in Kuala Lumpur on the previous day were also on time.

From my experience the only real punctuality issues seemed to surface around Kuala Lumpur - particular due to the daft arrangement ot cross-KL long-distance services stopping in one place to set down, pulling forward and then using a different platform to pick up. That always cost you a few minutes.

I think I will have to try to find out from station staff if my planned train is running to time, and if not be prepared to jump in a taxi for the firs leg of the journey.
