Malaga to Seville

Hi Folks,

I'll be doing this trip either one way or return in January. I'm just wondering do the tickets get more expensive nearer the time and how far in advance I should book, plus any other tips, advice.

I believe the fare is fixed, but can sell out. Renfe can be quite random about how far in advance they begin sales for a particular service, so don't fret if tickets don't become bookable till a month or two out.

There are three different journey offerings for this route!
1) a direct media distancia service taking just over three hours. This seems to be fixed at 24.95€ irrespective of the date.
2) a direct high speed Avant service which takes around 2 hours. This appears to be 46.70 € per single journey. Again no difference in price.
3) a service involving a change in Cordoba in which one or both legs may be by AVE. This does appear to be related to demand and the further ahead you book then it will probably be cheaper. The price for this varies significantly.

When we did Malaga to Seville in September last year our Avant train was so delayed we ended up getting half the fare back in compensation which was a nice bonus

Also, if you fancy variety and don't mind the extra time and cost changing at Cordoba you could try Iryo on one or both of the Malaga-Cordoba-Sevilla legs to compare an ETR1000 with RENFE's menagerie of Velaro, Talgo family and CAF units. Using a MD service for the other leg brings down the cost.

On whether to book ahead, be aware that in Spain Fridays and Sunday trains can be full, e.g. 2 out of the 4 MDs next Sunday afternoon are fully booked already 6 days ahead.

The broad gauge line, MD services, has better scenery between Málaga and Bobadilla with brief views if the El Chorro gorge if you get seats on the left. Standard gauge has more tunnel. At Antequera Santa Anna admire the ludicrously elaborate junctions (including a double track chord with flying junctions at both ends for the 3 trains per day Malaga-Granada).

both +1 from me too. We found that "No reservation available means no ticket!" Luckily for us the bus service (Seville to Cadiz) was good and they seem to just put another vehicle on if they sell more seats than the first has available.
