Making Tracks 2022 - Chester

Hi All,

I was in Chester at the weekend and stumbled across Pete Waterman's layout in the cathedral. Very impressive, with lots of variety of trains in operation.

I took a couple of poor photos - you can see Mr Waterman himself in the background of the first:

It looks absolutely brilliant - and the modern-image rolling stock I've seen running on it in videos just finish off the scene for me. I'm particularly partial to Tornado in that British Railways express passenger blue! If it gets someone interested in model railways, or even railways or modelling separately, it's a win, surely. (Also that overhead line looks lovely too!)

There were plenty of people clustered round enjoying watching the action, so yes, maybe some will be inspired and take up the hobby.

The two highlights for me were the sound fitted 37 pushing a yellow track recording train (or whatever those things are that come from Derby) and the 85 on a set of aircons - took me back to Travelcard leaps around the West Midlands.

Went on Saturday and it is certainly an impressive layout with plenty running round. Certainly more Avanti services on Pete's layout than in reality at the moment! Did spot that some of the operators was also allowing the public have a go at operating the trains as well.

Ah yes - I think I've seen a clip of that 85 in a video online somewhere. Looked very smart with the Mark 2s! And a 37 on a test train is always a nice sight.

Did spot that some of the operators was also allowing the public have a go at operating the trains as well.

That's brilliant - it's the sort of thing that could easily give someone the "bug" and get them into model railways (or even just getting them thinking about the hobby). It's surprising how many people like trains (or models) as a passive interest: imagine how many people you could get joining the hobby with things like this, showing what's possible and with approachable people there to explain it all.

I would say July/August is your best bet. Not seen any dates but it has been confirmed in one of the magazine's that Making Tracks 3 is happening. Believe it is going to be based around Milton Keynes this time.
