I travel frequently in the area of the WCML centred on Carlisle and have been increasingly aware of the number of incidences of severe service disruption caused by damage to the overhead.
There was another case today somewhere around Jcn, I think, which caused major cancellations and delays when I was trying to return home.
My personal favourite was last year, after damage near Carstairs, while returning from Edinburgh to Lockerbie via Newcastle, Carlisle (no taxis), Dumfries and bus.
I see no sign of these events decreasing at present.
Now I am not thinking of trees and trampolines and other egregious issues, but of the apparently frequent breakdowns under common operations.
Is this a current subject of actual design and engineering research work to make things more robust?
Other than a civil engineering failure, an OHLE issue seems to cause more widespread disruption than more or less anything else that could be categorised as railway causes. I would class it as very high priority.
If this has been already extensively discussed, I would be happy to be pointed to it.
