Would the broken rail have been detected by a break in the track circuit or by the driver feeling something unusual and then calling the signaler?

I would suspect at the late time of a Thursday night out of summer, the train to Scarborough would have been pretty empty

It was actually much busier than usual, seats for everyone, but not many spare. Usually at Seamer at that time maybe half a dozen will get off, on Thursday there would have been 20-30. From another post looks like the the 19.40 was the last departure Scarbourough, we left at about 22.20

I also forgot to mention that it came into Platform 4 first, after leaving 5, before going out again and coming in on 2.

Thanks to other posts for advice on mTicket
