National Rail Enquiries suggests via Havant. It also says you can use "GWR services between Portsmouth Harbour and London Waterloo"?????.....

I'm also amused by the advice to use GWR services via Dorking Deepdene which is closed for engineering works as well.

The whole network is completely stuffed. To anyone stuck I think get to Brighton, then either via Havant or via Hastings and SWR or SE to London.

Also if anyone can get to the Bluebell Railway by bus then there's one more train today at 15:45 from Sheffield Park (121 bus) or at 16:02 from Horsted Keynes (270 bus I think) which gets you to East Grinstead.

270 bus Brighton-Haywards Heath-East Grinstead. https://www.metrobus.co.uk/services/MB/270?date=2026-06-14&direction=outbound Might help anyone at HH. One more service today.

Another option for anyone in Brighton / Lewes is a number 29 bus to Uckfield (hourly trains to Oxted) or Tunbridge Wells (SE).
I do realise the seriousness of this situation, and sadly many will likely miss their flights. But I did laugh at the Bluebell Railway suggestion. Imagine you've just arrived from far-away lands, needing London, and part of your journey was behind a steam locomotive. You'd recount your trip for many dinner parties hereafter.

I think the reps are overwhelmed. I saw Southern twitter suggest someone takes an SWR train to Epsom then a Southern train to Horsham. Those don't run on Sundays.

There's a VSTP empty (5L80) going to East Grinstead, I presume to provide extra service to the copious numbers of people likely en route there by bus!!!

Unfortunately, 1B37 1332 Bognor Regis and Portsmouth Harbour to London Victoria went to Three Bridges to terminate rather than going north via Sutton so presumably had a coastal driver. There won't be a 1543 from Victoria. 1C38 1443 London Victoria to Portsmouth Harbour and Bognor Regis is heading south through Mitcham Junction.

East and West Coastway trains starting and terminating at Gatwick from the south. Seems that only the Caterham and East Grinstead trains are maintaining the service between London Bridge / Victoria respectively and East Croydon.

Personally I wouldn’t buy a ticket and would stand my ground if challenged by on train staff. Although as someone else said, customer services should in theory refund you. I think my hesitation is due to my past experiences of challenging customer services/delay repay after the fact, when they can say “ah but why didn’t you get on x train” when on the ground they hadn’t told me my train was cancelled by that point.

I also think it’s quite rare (in my experience anyway) for ticket staff to question odd routings in times of obvious disruption
This is significant disruption to thousands of people by now they should have put ticket acceptance in place and got briefings out to all staff including SE/SWR of the situation to facilitate all reasonable support for passengers

Ah, no wonder I couldn't see the acceptance on the route between Portsmouth/Havant and Waterloo with SWR, as they listed it against the wrong operator. So the ticket I bought was superfluous. Best take a picture of that when I submit a request for a refund of the ticket between Havant and Waterloo, to help explain the confusion.

Blocks up to Purley on the Redhills maybe working on Stoats Nest but can't do that much with Fasts open so could be a possibility to get block shortened back then can use the slow speed crossovers at Stoats to bypass the bridge. They can then get that under an emergency block to remediate the issue

1C42 which would have been the 1543 from Victoria will start from Three Bridges.

Currently Ore and Littlehampton services are running to / from Gatwick Airport.

There are also Gatwick - Horsham shuttles run by TL, some as 9 zulus and others as 9 romeos.

There is a limited service from Brighton to Gatwick running. Anyone who's not managing to get one one of these trains could go via Hove or Lewes. It looks like the Brighton trains are running as 9 tangos in the WTT/VAR schedules and being canned at Gatwick.

1F40 which was due to start from Gatwick has been binned and sent to the sidings. Reinstated to start from Gatwick plat 3 at 1623.

Would this work? Isn't the entire bridge suspect?

I am planning to travel tomorrow but I probably won't, unless they can find the exact sized brick to replace the hole tonight, it will not be open tomorrow at all, I highly doubt it. I think it's going to be a very long week for the BML.

Tomorrow will be easier than today. The slow/Redhill lines will be open if that's any use. They'll also have Redhill-Tonbridge, and the North Downs Line. No easy diversion, but it won't be as bad as now. The whole network is practically shut....

I thought its all line shuts until further notice, including the Redhill lines until its safe to reopen? Which includes closing all lines tomorrow until the bridge is repaired, which could be tonight if they have the ability, or sometime next week if they have to wait for the part.

Do we actually know that the slow lines in the Purley area will be open if the offending issue is at the point when the lines are all together?

Yes, but today the slow lines were shut anyway due to planned engineering works. Maybe they will be able to run trains from Brighton to Redhill, to pick up services to London via Dorking or Tonbridge.

Not sure. But my point is that tomorrow there is more slack in the system with more trains around and more lines open.

Hopefully there will be some RRBs in the next hour or two.

Hm, my main concern is finding the part to repair the bridge, however long it takes to get that part, is how long it takes to reopen the line, and if the bridge is more damaged than it appears... lord help the BML users.

According to twitter, I've seen someone needing to get an Uber to the airport due to this, and being charged £250 for the ride. What a rip off all because the trains are cancelled!

Let's hope they find the part to repair the bridge tonight, or else its going to be a big compensation bill.

Just watched it fly through Holmwood. 12 car but not particularly busy. Unfortunately lost quite a bit of time being stuck behind 2I36, not helped by being routed through the loop at Dorking.

Shows how useful and underused the back road is.

Yes, well that demonstrates the dominance of the railway in the Gatwick Airport transport market, and the risk of a single point of failure.

VSTP 1R44 1610 Victoria - Purley just instated. More to follow I suspect.

The Southern website also says no services between Purley and East Croydon, which isn't true. It's no service between Purley and Gatwick.

1600 may be a guess at when a structural engineer may have examined the bridge. It has been described as a sinkhole on an internal source, but a sinkhole on a bridge suggests something has moved causing ballast to fall though and a resulting hole in the formation.

Something has moved, their does seem to be a big gap in the bridge structure where the hole is.

Well at least it’s not load bearing. Is that those old fibre packing pads being used to fill the gap between the metalwork and the brickwork?
No idea, all I know is, there should not be a missing bit of bridge under the ballast, because clearly there is nothing holding that section of ballast up.

The Quarry lines just south of Stoats Nest Jctn have just changed from 'NOGO' to 'BTET', if this is of any significance?

Switched to Line Blocked / Blocked to Electric Traction. Presumably for the inspection?

BTET is block to electric traction so presumably they have discharged the traction current so pway can attend?

With pway coming along now then, we should hopefully find out in the next few hours whether it is repairable tonight, or if we have a long week ahead of us.
