Mainline stations without road access

Lake I.O.W, is on Araluen Way. Not a busy road but it has lots of houses on it. All NR stations on the Isle of Wight have road access apart from Smallbrooke Junction which is only served when the Steam Railway is in operation. If you miss the last train from there, you really are stranded as you cant leave the platform!

Sunderland? It's in a pedestrianised area of the city centre.

Waterloo Place isn't, got a taxi rank and a drop-off zone by the looks of it.

Does anyone know about Hawarden Bridge? Having just gone past it on the train it appeared a) fairly derelict, overgrown and unused and b) in the middle of a works complex of some sort. Not having access to Google Maps for a few days, can anyone confirm whether this can be added to the list of stations without public road access or not?

I have just looked at Hawarden Bridge on Google Maps. It seems to have no public roads up to it. The only road leading to it appears blocked at each end with "Corus" signs and all looks very private to me - so unless someone can give any more information, I think Hawarden Bridge needs to go on the list of stations without public road access.

As an aside, it looked VERY derelict and overgrown - I could have mistaken it for a closed abandoned station!

At last count without checking, about two trains a day,a bit like Helsby to The Port, it was a John Summers steelworks stop.

I thought the road might be public, but when you go on streetview and look at the said road, especially to the right, there are two roads in. One is blocked with a big pile of spoil, and one involves going through the Corus entrance. The other side is the plant itself - so I would think it is definately not accessible to the general public.

I wanted to know which stations you could not normally approach by car, ie on a publicly accessible road.

Was Angel Road nominated? I think you'd be pretty unpopular if you stopped to drop someone off on Conduit Lane, where the access is from, and the station itseld is then down a set of step, under a the road, down a further set of steps, about 100m along a not-exactly-lovely path by a scrap yard and finally onto the platform (with an overbridge to southbound.

Technically Newhaven Marine is still on the network with the parliamentary taxi so I guess that would count as the only road in is controlled by port security?

You can get to Newhaven Harbour and Newhaven Marine by public road without problem. I had a visit there last year and got off the train at Harbour, had a good poke around marine, and then walked down to Town station by road without going throug and gates, check points etc. There is a check point adjacent to the station, but that is for another road and doesn't stop you getting up to Harbour or Marine stations.

I think Angel Road qualifies. You can't drive up close to the platforms to drop anyone off and the only access appears to be from a busy road with no stopping allowed. It seems as if pedestrians only is the order of the day here. (All confirmed via Google Earth) Well spotted. It goes on the list.

As a diversion- are there any other stations named for streets that cannot be accessed from the named street? "Angel Road" is in fact part of the North Circular, which passes over the station on a flyover as part of an elevated section.

Hmm. Angel Road's near neighbour Silver Street is also no longer on the street that it was named after. (In both cases, the reconstruction and the fairly recent expansion of the North Circular did for them both, if much less dramatically in the case of Silver Street)

Walthamstow Queens Road station isn't on, and never has been on, a street of that name

Fairly sure there are others too! It'd be odd for all the examples of this phenomena to be in more or less the same part of North-east London

I wanted to put Longcross went there one evening to watch steam special , ended up late and dark very Lonely creepy station. If you look at it google earth thats my picture.

Slightly off thread as now an LU station only (Chiltern non-stops) but Moor Park on the Met line cannot be accessed by the great unwashed as part of a gated community.

I think you can walk out of the locality and presumably get a taxi out, but as far as I'm still aware you can't drive in. (Interestingly there's a clip on John Betjeman's "Metro-Land" on the same subject).

looking on google streetview, whilst the signs signs says "No Through Road" and "Access Only", they also have "free parking for shoppers"- so you're not, by default, banned from access.

Yup. provisos would include that as it is private land, you can be asked by the owner or their representative ( i guess the estate has private security patrols) to leave at any time- but I would assume that if you're not causing trouble, they're unlikely to do so. There's even an NCP car park at the station.

Ryde Pier Head is currently a station with no road access as it was found out that the road pier was rotting! The road pier isn't due to be finished for a long while yet, its currently all dismantled! A walkway has temporarily been built on the former tramway pier and the train still runs as normal.

I've got a few days off, so will drive that way and see for real.

It is a Private Estate with barriers, although all up and un-manned today. Reason they're un-manned is they have ANPR cameras recording every number plate of every vehicle entering and leaving the estate, so guess they can shut the place at any time they wish. On that basis I guess it doesn't have full and un-restricted access.

Really? That is quite odd... and I got off the Met there once while waiting for a connection! I wandered round the main street up and thought it looked a little odd, but didn't know it was that secluded! I feel like I've been somewhere I shouldn't have... no wonder there was no fast-food outlet for a quick snack that I could find :P

I suspect the situation at Moor Park is that anybody could walk to or from the station if they wished but only certain individuals would be allowed drive there.
