Hello everyone

How much does a mainline driver roughly take home a month? I've heard 3.5/4 grand,how close to reality is that?

Varies company to company and that is closer to a pre tax/NI amount. My net pay for a basic month is under £3k.

£60k? I wish...... with loads of overtime yes you can do that but not basic at most TOCs

Ah right. The ones I’ve seen are £49k - £63k.

I’ve seen Virgin west and cross country listed as over 60k on job ads. Have seen high 40s on quite a few others.

Yeah. I’ve seen a few just under 60k too, but there is pay talks if I’m not mistaken so could see a little boost soon.

I’d say after paying your pension and union fee you’d be looking at £2500-£2700 per month take home pay. This is what I’ve seen from looking around at the jobs advertised.

This is far more realistic.

My company will be on 61k in October so should be over 3k easily without any overtime. Couple of rest days a month and you won't be far off 4k.

Yeah, as I said putting in £60k to the calculator is £3.5k a month, are union fees and pension that much?

Union you can choose to pay out of your own bank. That's 30 a month. Pension is about 230 and you can top that up with brass which gets deducted before tax

Think I’m on about 2.3k take home but that’s 90% and over 28 days. But As Sunday’s dont count to that and I can’t remember the last pay packet without overtime in it, I’m honestly not sure. I’m clearing 2.9-3.2k in most 28 day periods.

Remember, when you are calculating monthly pay you have to factor in divided by 13, not 12.

I use a website called listen to taxman , then I times the monthly by 12 then divide total by 13.

Is 230 for pension the minimum? Also what’s brass? Sorry I’m not too clued up on pension schemes especially on the railway.

Brass is an extra pension if you like, it comes out of your wages before tax so you are taxed less. The pension amount I believe is a set amount but the brass you can pay a big chunk in if you wish. Im not sure of the maximum amount as I don't put much in but then I've still got about 25 years left. Some of the older people put a fair bit in to counteract the lower normal pension they will get as they will have less time in the scheme .

It is also see as the sensible option for tax purposes If you can swallow the hit on the deduction then the tax savings on your pension contribution provides a better long term return. The best time to do it is when the pay deal goes through. The increase in wages will offset the deduction and your no worse off.

I'll be working for greater anglia from october,as shunter for a start then hopefully i'll go mainline as i've heard they are bringing back progression,i think they are around 47-50k at the moment,not 100% sure.

Context: A London Postman doing 68hrs a week takes home £604/week after an 11% pension cont. But fcuk does that hurt.

What depot you going to.. Cambridge, Ilford, Colchester, Clacton or Crown point. They is talks of progression under the so called harmonisation going on.

Brass is the railway AVC in pension lingo.

Ilford my depot. Talk of it, all depends on the new deal that we have no information yet on as ASLEF won't tell the members nothing. Even though we pay £29 a month for them to act on our behave. On the last pay deal the company took out the line of promotions to safe money, only ring-fence drivers become mainline. Keep fingers crossed!
