In my Platform 5 Locomotive spotters book on page 82 theres a section called 'Former BR Locomotives In Industrial Service' it says 'These locomotives do not currantly have Network Rail engineering acceptance for operation on the National Rail network' .
Can the 08 shunters in this section be used on the mainline if there hired to a mainline operator, and if not what would happen if there caught doing so?

No they can't. They've not been declared fit to use the National Rail network, it doesn't matter who runs them, there'll be trouble. I don't know whether it would be able to happen because the loco won't have TOPS registration either. If it did happen there'd be a severe bollocking and a fine at least I'm sure.
