In the days when mail bags were still handled at railway stations, some stations had mail bag conveyors, linking together platforms and sometimes also an adjacent MLO – Mechanised Letter Office. I remember these in use at Newport and Bristol Temple Meads, which both had adjacent sorting offices. Essentially, these were a continuous chain which was always on the move. Mail bags were hooked on and off as required. Many sorting offices also had these conveyors internally.
Some stations retained these conveyors, disused, for some time after their intended use had ended.
Which stations had these conveyors, and where were the last ones in use? When were they first used? Did they see use at the large London sorting offices linked to the Post Office Railway at all?
