hi.

Looking through this forum I have seen a large amount of mad or downright pointless ideas, so I decided to set up a thread where you can post them.
My ideas are:
  • Converting redundant pacers into sleeper coaches
  • converting pacers into EMUs and working them on the WCML, replacing the class 390s (and the best thing is, it already comes with a tilting mechanism!)
Any other ideas?

Convert Mk3 into double-decker coaches

  1. Create an matter/antimatter engine and travel at relativistic speed. Travel from London to Edinburgh in 0.004 seconds (based on 0.5c) although you will put on quite a bit of weight during the journey.
  2. Give everyone their own little carriage that can be bolted to each other to form a larger train
  3. Replace all roads with rail track to facilitate the above
  4. Replace all existing stock with pacers

Invest all of HS2's money + more into the hyperloop - from a tunnel at Calais in the south to Glasgow in the north, Belfast/Dublin in the west and Cambridge to the east.
Put a coach behind the loco on all freight services that can be used by enthusiasts.

Maybe with retiring Mk 3s? £100 or thereabouts per year season ticket for enthusiasts - circulated only by word-of-mouth and letters to railway and model railway magazines and associations. Access is only granted having shown the driver your season ticket and convinced him/her that you are a genuine enthusiast - no commuters or holidaymakers unless they are real enthusiasts too.

Like it. Or on a container train, they could use one of those site cabins that would just get craned on once fully booked. Might have to weld the windows shut and move the doors to the end though...

Regauging the whole network to 5ft (1524mm) gauge without altering the loading gauge should take the cake being an enormous undertaking with an astronomical price tag and no use whatsoever.

On the subject of enthusiasts' coaches, I'd say that it would offer enthusiasts a very different way of crossing the country.

Or in a slight variation to the theme, conversion of the entire network to Irish gauge in order that, should an Irish Sea tunnel prove impossible, at least through freight wagons and sleeper cars might be carried on a train ferry.

On a more sinister note, conversion of Europe's entire network to Russian gauge may well have been part of some notional Soviet invasion plan during the cold war!

A bit OTT on ALL freight services !
If however restricted to selected services, then it seems a fairly sensible idea to me.
Not just for enthusiasts, but also for the limited number of ordinary passengers who wish to make journeys too obscure to justify a proper passenger service.
And of course for staff.

Talking of staff, I noticed on recent Australian TV railway travelogues that many long distance freights there have a staff car with mess rooms and bunks used by alternating crews for rest and breaks on the move. It's justified there with the distances involved and remoteness of the interior routes and is no doubt to avoid having a number of small crew relief depots out in the middle of nowhere. For Joe (or Bruce in Australia) Public to use such vehicles, there would be the added complication of access for boarding and alighting. Additional mini boarding platforms might be provided in goods loops and yards with safe access arranged to public roads. It wouldn't be a great idea to stop a fully loaded lengthy aggregates train additionally across a busy junction in the south east just for a few enthusiasts to be let on or off at a normal station, and the extra brake wear and fuel to restart would have to be accounted for. Then there's signalling. Freight is allowed to pass over hand points and unlocked facing points and into non block worked areas under the authority of a shunter or yard supervisor. Passengers require better safeguards by law.

Non of these challenges is insurmountable however. Equipping hundreds, maybe thousands, of hand points, some very rarely used, in yards and industrial sidings with full passenger signalling is a perfectly reasonable objective, clearly. With the political will and sufficient funding, a scheme of such great merit and national importance is bound to generate a massive positive BCR and I demand a fully detailed study into the proposal is commenced immediately by the industry's finest experts :)

Personally, I want a 200mph Pullman service from my front door to my office, with trains every five minutes. I don't think that's too much to ask.

Replace grayling's car with a Merseyrail 142 hauled on a flatbed lorry. He has to ride in the 142.

Or just not subsidise his car where he can take the train - i.e. most of the time. He has to squeeze onto the train and only use the car on isolated, pothole filled road.

Or maybe a 200 km/h service from your local mainline station to the large terminus in the city you work in.

Or just add platforms or re-route train that currently get driver changes and scheduled stops anyway.

I have a few "mad ideas" which I have posted before in other threads on this forum. I shall quote some of my best ones below. :)

Class 139 Refurbishment:
Firstly, sell all three of the Class 139s to Virgin Trains. Replace the engines with ones capable of 125mph and rip out all existing seating. Remodel the floor and lay down stylish new ‘Virgin carpets’ and install Grammer IC3000 (ATW variant) seats in 2+2 arrangement. A new Virgin Trains moquette shall be designed, and this moquette shall include all the famous landmarks around Britain on a piece of lovely bright red cloth, which will undoubtedly get dirty and worn out over time but that’s expected. The majority of seats shall be airline style, with the exception of two bays of seats being centred around a table in the middle section of the train. The two cabs shall be modified so that the driver sits on the far left side of the train in a confined space, similar to Class 450 cabs. The remaining right side of each cab will be converted into essential facilities for passengers. On one end of the train will be a compact buffet bar selling a variety of hot and cold snacks as well as beverages. On the other end of the train will be a state-of-the-art toilet which combines the usual toilet experience with a slice of complimentary entertainment. A small screen (similar to FGW’s Volo TV) will be fitted to one of the interior walls of the toilet, and this will play classic movies on an endless loop in order to aid your toilet experience and make your journey as comfortable as possible. A passenger information system shall also be fitted to the ceiling of the train, Hitachi style, i.e. green text, and the usual Class 390 announcements shall also be installed to be used when appropriate.

Open Access Operator Fantasy:
I’d purchase a fleet of old double-decker Blackpool trams, and modify them so they could all be capable of running on the national rail network. I’d install Fainsa ‘ironing board’ seats but keep everything else original because they are nice trams and they deserve to keep their heritage.

I’d run one route only, and that’d be from Kinbrace to Lake (IOW). The calling points would be as follows:

Kinbrace | Altnabreac (double back) | Kinbrace | [ into Inverness and back out immediately without stopping ] | Dalwhinnie | [ 5 hour 43 minute halt on the Forth Bridge to admire the view ] | [ into Edinburgh and back out again without stopping ] | Breich | Uddingston [ 2 hour 16 minute stop to allow passengers to visit the Tunnock’s factory ] | [ into Glasgow Central and back out again without stopping ] | Kilmarnock | Auchinleck (double back) | Kilmarnock | New Cumnock (double back) | Kilmarnock | Kirkconnel (double back) | Kilmarnock | [ via the Settle and Carlisle line ] | Crossflatts | [ Leeds to York via Church Fenton without stopping ] | [ around the Harrogate loop ] | Hornbeam Park (where the train will divide) - [ the tram will split in half and only the front half will continue onto Lake whilst the other half reverses back and terminates at Harrogate ] | [ into Leeds and back out again without stopping ] | [ full speed down the ECML ] | [ through the Thameslink Core ] | Guildford | [ full speed down the PDL ] | [ not stopping at Portsmouth Harbour - straight onto a specialised ferry with train tracks onboard - and onto the IOW ] | Smallbrook Junction | Lake (train terminates)!

This route would run once every 7.5 days and it’s estimated to take between 2-3 days.

Below is a hand-drawn route map. I would do it on some sort of sophisticated software, but unfortunately I do not have access to which.

Go green. Instead of running diesel, give all the window seat passengers an oar and they can push their way along.

I need a volunteer guard to stand at the front with a whip though.

I don't care about the speed, just bring back the Chesham Pullmans.
What I do want is a funicular from Chesham station to the Leisure Centre as the thought of walking up White Hill after a night out usually prompts me to grab the car keys. Of course if they built it the operating hours would probably be much the same as the existing bus with nothing after tea time.

Good shout, I'd love a funicular from my house up the hill to Bob's Smithys. Actually one from Horwich to Winter Hill summit might be profitable if anyone's got a few million in capital

Re-route the Didcot - Oxford line via Abingdon, tunnelling underneath Abingdon with a station beneath the town centre.

Oh and electrify and four-track it while you're at it.

Due to enter service during the new timetable change from York to Scandinavia via lindisfarne. Numbered as the class 145 "super pacer"
