Macclesfield to London via Leamington?

For an off-peak return Macclesfield to London, not tied to a specific operator, would it be valid to travel to Coventry on a Saturday evening, stop overnight, then resume the journey at Leamington next morning (Sunday) and travel in to Marylebone? (This would be on the outward portion of an off-peak return.)

If you go on the forums website and in additional options, do via Leamington, change at only, with say 400 mins additional waiting time, and then time it to be taking whatever evening train you wish to take, you might be able to generate an itinerary taking these trains - you may have issues with ticket barriers, however, but overall I would expect it to be fine once you show the itinerary. I have done this once before when travelling Ipswich to Plymouth with a BoJ in Reading and didn't have any issues with my ticket's date being the day before, although I didn't have to go through any gatelines, so it was only checked by one staff member and that was it.

I have used the return portions of Off Peak Returns from London to Cheshire to include a stop in both Oxford and Leamington Spa (on separate occasions). Although, I didn't try any overnight breaks in journey.

When I did the break at Oxford, my ticket was rejected by both the barriers at Paddington and Oxford. When I did the break at Leamington my ticket was accepted by the barriers at Marylebone but wasn't at Leamington Spa. I did find when doing a break in journey showing the ticket to a member of staff and saying "I'm breaking my journey here" was fine.

Have you checked split ticket options e.g. Advance or combination of Advances to Coventry, and same for Marylebone, then a single for your return journey?

Something like a Macclesfield to Rugby return (£59.50), then a Coventry to London return routed via High Wycombe (£36.40), then excess that return to the any permitted route (£12.30) is probably the best bet, this will allow you to travel Macclesfield to Coventry on the first ticket outbound, then travel Leamington to London on the second ticket, then for the return you can take an avanti direct from London to Macclesfield, since from what I see they pretty much all stop at Rugby, as you'd be splitting your tickets at rugby so the train must call there (ending the journey short on the london to coventry ticket)

That might need some patience explaining to the ticket checker at Euston. I'm boarding a Manchester via Stoke service with a Coventry route: High Wycombe ticket, excessed to route: Any Permitted. I know this train doesn't call at Coventry but I'm only going as far as Rugby on this ticket.

The OP is using the outward half though, where overnight BoJ is only permitted if the journey cannot be completed that day (undefined and disputed meaning!).

(I presume they are travelling on Sunday 3 March when there are no arrivals from North of Bletchley before 1147 (and that's from Northampton)?). The normal timetable would allow an 1110 arrival. I presume also that they have an offer of a free bed for the night in the Coventry/Leamington area?)

I think it is arguable but not certain that an overnight break is permissible

Yes which is why I stressed I was travelling on the return part both times and completed my journey the same day. As the revenue staff didn't question the route choice, even though it wasn't the most obvious one, I thought it was worth posting that.

Correct! It's my sister travelling from Macclesfield; I live in Coventry; and I'll be joining her for the second half of the journey down to London.

As it happens she's decided to book advance tickets instead, as she now wants to go somewhere else afterwards. But this is useful information!

One more question: if two of us are travelling Leamington to London, but only one of us (me) is returning… are we able to buy a Chiltern Duo ticket? That is to say, if I use a Duo ticket and on the return part there's just one person, is the ticket still valid or is it compulsory that two people are travelling at all times?

Same as Northern similar ticket, same as using Two Together railcard.
