I have bought 2 advance tickets for travel on cross county today from Berwick to Newcastle and they have been delivered to my cross country app by way of a mobile ticket that you present on the screen of your phone to the train manager. I have tried to find out more about them online but there isn't much information about them apart from ensure your phone is charged up and you have your payment card with you etc.

I have several questions that I hope someone will know the answer to.
1. How is an m ticket checked? I assume it is via the barcode but there is also an option to activate the ticket. What is the purpose of activating the ticket and what happens if someone forgets to activate their m ticket?
2. What is the best time to activate the ticket? I will assume it should be done just before getting on the train but what if someone activates the ticket say, just after they buy it, does that make any difference?
3. What are the compensation arrangements on m tickets in the event of delays / cancellations as it isn't practical to send your mobile phone in?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Activate it just before travel. If you activate it too far in advance then the ticket could show as expired before you travel.

It is checked by revenue staff checking you are on the train shown on your m-ticket, you will need to show the card that you used to pay with and the last 4 digits should match those shown on your m-ticket. The randomly generated flag colours on your phone should match that on the Staff's phone which is one of the security features.

As to compensation, I would assume the m-ticket has some sort of reference number on it? If so you'd probably quote that in your claim.
