Wouldn't surprise me entirely if they just get away with it (but have to use contactless for the Tube) because nowhere along the way can actually do it! Avanti are now bog roll and there's no longer a LNR ticket office at Euston, while MKC gateline is unlikely to notice that they haven't come from the north.

That's as may be, but isn't the person in question travelling from Lympstone Commando to Milton Keynes Central on their outward journey, and so probably won't encounter anyone from Avanti until they're either at London Euston or Birmingham New Street, depending on the actual route taken.

If GWR stations and on-board don't do CCST (do they?) then Euston will be the first opportunity.

I'd be surprised if GWR didn't do CCST at booking offices, though, they sell enough Travelcards.

The ticket office at Exeter St Davids is excellent in my experience. They are well used to issuing change of route excesses due to the 'via Taunton' and 'via Honiton' tickets between Exeter and London.

I suspect it's pretty much all Exeter ticket office deal with & it's a full time job I've not used them much, but when I have they've always been excellent.

Technically there is no specific easement however Barnwood Junction (where the line coming from Gloucester station joins the mainline to Cheltenham Spa) is treated as part of Gloucester for calculating via and avoid points. It is in the RDG "master station names file". The train doesn't need to stop at Gloucester; definitely fine to go that way.

And this is exactly the information that was needed!

I wonder if any other junctions are treated like this, say Carmarthen (Bridge) Junction on a via Carmarthen flow, or Heald Green South/North Junctions for via Manc Airport?

I imagine Exeter St David's is used to dealing with the fallout of odd tickets originating from Lympstone Commando.

Id imagine the majority of tickets to/from Lympstone Commando are issued by American Express GBT via the trainline.

I'm so glad I asked about this issue on here. The number and variety of answers has been much higher than ever expected and have been gratefully received.

Given that the journey is tomorrow and it's expected to be hotter than today, I suspect fares/tickets may be the least of my son's challenges tomorrow.

No I get the same thoughts. It’s a good job some understand all the minutiae involved with some tickets, but I’m sure others just like playing the game to see which Fairlop loophole they can exploit.

I remember Lumo had an issue with "via York" tickets not being seen as valid via the "York avoiding lines", I don't know if/how that was fixed.

Seriously, the outcome was that my son used the ticket exactly as routed, and despite an early check on NRE showing the 17:10 BHM to MKC was cancelled, the journey was flawless albeit full and standing between Exeter and Bristol Temple Meads.

I remember Lumo had an issue with "via York" tickets not being seen as valid via the "York avoiding lines", I don't know if/how that was fixed.

York Yard South Junction was added as an equivalent location for York, in a similar manner as for Gloucester.
