But as above it's for people either making a journey to/from the mainline.

still pointless. does that mean they should also have a first class area of the platform to wait on for their train, or perhaps a first class footbridge to cross the line away from all the standard class scum?

What about people who are visiting friends in Byfleet and Newhaw and traveling from Southampton during off peak. Should they have first class all the way? How about someone travelling from London to Wanborough, should they have first class travel all the way?

I don't see much difference. Other than the fact some rolling stock doesn't have first class. In fact given the cost of housing in parts of Surrey, I'm surprised some lines don't have first class, e. g. The Cobham line. Perhaps the very rich don't travel by train.

However it more than likely suits the railway to run trains with first class to Lymington than other non first class rolling stock.

A First Class lounge at Brockenhurst would do nicely!

It's all to do with the overall journey experience. Provide first class on the branch and the first class passenger will think twice about driving to Brockenhurst.

Will the places being more rural have an impact on whether people drive to another station besides there closest one?

And let the local Hoi Polloi rub every one else's noses in it. So charming.

At the moment the minimum length that SWT will allow a train comprised of 456 units is 4 cars. If however, there is a continuous juice rail (no gaps) then they could make an exception and allow a 2 car service as the unit won't get gapped.

Agreed they wont use a 456, but once upon a time the SW ran 2 car units called 2BILs, which sometimes ran singly. Did they often get gapped? ☺

Could take the centre cars out of a 450 and use them to strengthen a couple of other 450s to 5 car?

I think people are overlooking the obvious solution. A 442 or two with the non driving trailers removed is clearly the answer. There must be someone at Bournemouth who remembers how to maintain them! I dare say with only three carriages they'd be fairly quick off the mark as well.

You know it makes sense.

442's were only permitted down there with the emergency rate (aka series only) switch operated and that made them very slow!

I remember that but I don't ever remember working a two car.The could probably get gapped quite easily.I nearly got gapped coming out of Clapham yard with a 5 car 444 once.Just about rolled out @ 3mph.

You would have still been at school when they were running around, they were withdrawn at the beginning of the 70's.
You're probably thinking of 2-HAP or 2-EPB.

 Correct but it was still a 2 car.I remember.HAP.;)

Generally it was 2x2 car HAP and a 4 car VEP formation.

Using either a 455/456 could be indicative of the start of BM crews doing some suburban work, in between a 1Wxx or 1Bxx service.
Would scare the hell out of a BM crew if they were told they were on the slow lines Woking to Waterloo, all stations! ;)

Modern EMUs don't work like that, there is various equipment distributed throughout the train instead of being duplicated on every car - or in this case 'quintuplicated' as it's a four car EMU.

The expense and inconvenience of doing such a move would easily outweigh both the negligible energy savings made by using a shorter unit on the branch and the negligible operational benefits of having a handful of lengthened units which are restricted as to where they can stop.

You ought to have seen the face of a Salisbury man who got given an SSO for West Byfleet, Byfleet & NH, Weybridge & Walton OT, due to electrical supply problems one Sunday morning!

I was on a 455 & routed up the fast, that Salisbury bloke didn't catch me up until Wimbledon Durnsford Road!

Single 2HAP and 2EBP used to run quite happily up and down the Medway valley line and there are many level crossings there.

I remember that one well, the up slow had been handed back (late) for diesel traction only so the up Exeter/Salisburys were run as replacements for the Woking stoppers, they seemed to lose an inordinate amount of time at each station, cant think why!
