Does anybody know what the situation is with loco hauled services on this route?

I had heard that the locos and stock were to be replaced by new units from the current timetable, but have seen reports of three or four loco hauled trains per day in operation in the last week.

No - December 2019 for the units to replace locos

Don't forget that there are also class 560 EMU motor cars on this route which work turn and turn about with the locos though they haul the same coaching stock.

I was on the Voralpen Express a few weeks ago and it was loco hauled then.

It's a rather good run between Lucerne & St Gallen, so look forward to having another go at it sometime soon.

Technically the RBDEs allocated to the VAE are 561s.

The locos push as well as haul as they are top and tail (due to the severe gradients). Normally trains are either 561 + 561, Re456 + Re456; Re446 (ex SBB Re4/4IV) + Re446
