Hi all,

I'm planning a trip from LUTON to LEICESTER tomorrow (Monday 27 December).

I wanted some advice on split tickets to reduce the fare; the standard super off peak is about £32.

I have an Annual Gold Card.

Therefore, I was thinking of the following (all off peak day return tickets):

LUTON TO BEDFORD with gold card disc: £4.50
BEDFORD to KETTERING £9.70
KETTERING to LEICESTER £10.1O

TOTAL: £24.30

Can anyone better this? Are there any problems in doing this, apart from having to return on services which either call at Kettering and Bedford or changing there anyway (which seems fine tomorrow as services appear to have extra stops)?

All answers appreciated

I'd doubt that that can be bettered given that EMT must price all the fares apart from probably the Luton to Bedford one. There are only two other stations between Bedford and Leicester and they would start to impact your options re the train calling at each ticket change point.

Seems to be the most sensible option. I could have sworn a few years ago it was massively cheaper! Nevermind.

I tried Hitchin > Peterborough > Leicester but it came out about £3 more than your price.

I used a Flitwick to Rugby via Bedford anytime return for around £16 for years as the ticket was always vaild via Leicester/Nuneaton or Bletchley. Only once did i ever get anyone question it on a MML hst but once he checked the ticket validity on his machine he was fine.

Unfortunatly i have not purchased one since the LM trent valley services started so am unsure if it is still valid via Leicester and Nuneaton maybe someone can confirm?

If it is valid the following is possible

Luton to Flitwick (GC Discount included) £17.40
Flitwick to Rugby via Bedford £2.95

The above would involve having to use FCC between Luton and Bedford though

that's only permitted via Bletchley and not Leicester.
Luton to Nuneaton is permitted via Leicester, but doesn't save much money.
