The problem is the travel centre and departure displays are only for the local Arriva buses. If you are catching other services such as National Express then you have no idea, as those services don't appear on the board. A proper ticket hall and lounge would benefit both the railway station and the open wind swept interchange.

What the railway station could do is to have a departure screen in the booking hall which lists the coach/bus departures ie just showing destination, time of departure and what stop.

Hertford North has a agreement with Intralink to have such a screen in the booking hall there so it is possible, no idea what other stations in Hertfordshire has these screens though?

As to the proper ticket hall and lounge that you propose, the last time I was there in May there was still some disused land near the existing Starbucks which has been fenced off - could they not develop that for the use you have suggested or is it being used for something else?

I agree and Hertfordshire does have a few stations like this - St Albans City has a bus and train departure boards both inside and outside the booking hall. Watford Junction has a live bus departure board as soon as you leave the station and I'm pretty sure Borehamwood and Hatfield have them too but haven't alighted at these stations since their redevelopement so I'm not 100%. Given all the investment in the busway, it is quite shoddy.

Elstree and Borehamwood has just been renovated and the work of refurbishing St Albans City is due to commence in August.
I wonder when we can expect some needed refurbishment at Luton ? The station is a dump and really doesn't act as a welcoming gateway for the town.

There is a large space between the station frontage and the Starbucks coffee shop opposite which would be perfect for a ground floor ticket hall in much the same way as provided at Luton Airport Parkway. It could provide a light and airy space at the front of the old station buildings for secure cycle storage, lifts and escalators to a mezzanine level for access to the platforms and overbridge. Even enough room for a combined rail/bus travel centre, waiting area, a café and a shop. The work could be accomplished by a local builder with further railway related work conducted by Network Rail to introduce an expanded gateline on the existing overbridge for departing passengers and perhaps a second bridge with escalators and lifts to platforms for use by arriving passengers.

The current 1960's design building should be renovated to a high standard and adjoin the new extension.
It serves both Thameslink and EMT services so facilities should be safe, secure and effective for a modern travel experience.

on the contrary, the station seems like a softener-upper of what to expect in the rest of the town!
it's not just the station that's a dump.

luton- twinned with homs/airstrip one would seem quite fitting.
I did notice that J10 of the M1 now has some sort of flower arrangement thingy as you come off the junction onto the bypass

"welcome to Luton" it says
.....it's just missing the words ,"good luck!" below it.

anyway, it does have its plusses.
In the event of war, russia would never nuke it, because the aftermath would look like an improvement!
