How unusual is it for a northbound train (not a reverser) to do this? Never seen it happen before!

It's not as unusual as you'd think. Happens a couple of times a week I'd say.

Blackfriars absolutely reeks of train brakes tonight.
Reminds me of the smell of a poorly maintained HST 125 in the mid 90s, used to make me feel sick, but now just causes nostalgia!

Would this be due to diversions of Southeastern services due to problems in the London Bridge area? Perhaps platforms were unavailable as they were taken up by a diverted service.

In the thameslink core - St Pancras to Blackfriars, it’s not that unusual. If a train breaks down - as they do especially at City and Farringdon - then trains have to go on the other side to get unblock everything.
