Stansted for one - drop off in the long stay car park and wait for the shuttle bus.

These aren't really loopholes, but rather price differentiation - they are completely deliberate. They exist so people who would be put off the airport entirely by a fee might still use it, but those who aren't too bothered pay it.

It was mid-stay last time I went there - first hour was free, second hour at something like £5.00. But fundamentally, yes it’s one of those where drop offs can be cost efficient as opposed to express set down right next to the terminal.

The price of the DART isn't a major issue for me, as I'm happy to pay the extra so that I don't have to wait very long. But the infrastructure is lacking: for all that money, couldn't they build a pedestrian tunnel to take people from the DART station at the airport to the terminal?

The central terminal area is a work-in-progress, I don't doubt something like that (probably above ground) will be part of the planned expansion and second terminal.

Be grateful for a narrow covered walkway. Those walking from the car drop off area have no cover until they pass the Dart station.
If Terminal 2 is ever built the tunnel will need a major extension with a sharp left turn with all the winding gear needing moving half a mile and new longer cabling attached. I would expect plenty of down time as the testing of the dart took 18 months.

They may have designed it so one track can be kept operational during the transition - or even both except for short changeover periods. The new tunnel and winding gear could be built with the existing one continuing to be used, then a new longer cable would be fitted which ran through the original winding gear area to reach the new one.

I tried the Luton DART today. The shuttles have internal screens listing flights. These screens are mostly blank/dark space. The text is so small you would have to be really close to read it. I suspect this will get fixed.

I've passed this observation to the Luton DART management.

Luton DART tell me that a bigger font and more useful information is being planned.

Five weeks on from the full opening (pics taken on Snooker Monday), here's how it looks at the Parkway end. Note the taxi rank and DART-replacement bus stops are finally complete, although still fenced off - the last remaining on-site project task, it seems.

A far cry from the humble side entrance that was provided 10 years ago!

A pedantic point, but the fourth photo in post 640 shows a large sign on the Luton Parkway Dart concourse reading ThamesLink.
Surely its been Thameslink ever since Chris Green named it that decades ago.

Do the people who design, erect & check everything have no interest & nothing to do with the railway...presumably coming & going via their company cars?

That is just the way they’ve chosen to brand it.
Just how Morrisons has always been Morrisons. It did not rename itself from MORRISONS in 2016 just because it brought out a new lowercase logo.

I was about to say that.
But some of their website banners have a lower case "L".
As does my first Googled photo of 319 stock.
But 700's are upper case.
Curious!
Curious indeed, but what's shown in the photo certainly can't be considered wrong.

Check out the website of the train operating company, in particular the logo at the top left of the page.
Thanks Haywain.
I must apologise to the Dart people who are blameless & instead focus my spite on Thameslink management !

Open the Thameslink Link you refer to & you are right.
It is headed ThamesLink. Scroll down a few lines to a section that changes every few seconds & one of the changes is headed Thameslink.

...and the first law of branding is consistency! (Otherwise, why else have branding at all?)
Considering the 319s are long gone, the fleet is consistent - all the 700s have the same logo.

The screen in the photo is correct, that’s been the logo for a number of years now.

Have they won the prize for the world's smallest bus stop? You would be hard pushed to park a minibus in that space.

And why does a stone bench jutt out into the bus stop? Madness.

Yes, it’s called a change of logo :D
They had a similar one to Great Northern but with a purple bottom bit instead of blue. That was all lower case. It was changed to the current logo around 2016/2017.

That's not a bench; it's a concrete block aligned with the security bollards (actual benches are of a slightly different shape). Why it juts into the bus stop I have no idea; could well be the planners couldn't find a way to elegantly combine bus stop provision with the security bollard line and thought, "Screw it; these bus stops will only ever handle buses for a few days each year so who'll honestly care about a single substandard iteration?"

Associated ref on the Luton planning site is 23/00259/DOC (much of the public realm there is technically an early portion of the Bartlett Square development as opposed to the DART project).

I used this for the first time last week.
It's an improvement on the bus, but loads of issues made a very un-smooth journey.

1) Ticket barriers are chaotic. There are way too few of them, it seems like a massive waste of space to have such a large station building but then only have such a narrow/short gate line? There were big crowds backing up at each one as for half of the people (myself included) our valid tickets were not working and 'seek assistance' was flashing up. The need to go through two gate lines in quick succession at the railway station end, doubling that crowd queue and ticket failure is also infuriatingly inefficient. The staff also could not explain why our tickets were randomly not working. Rather than wave everyone through, he was individually opening the gates for each person one at a time. With 200+ people needing to get through. Chaos!

2) Capacity is not enough. Our shuttle was full and standing, packed like a rush hour tube train with nothing to grip, and we left people waiting on the platform who could not board. If it's already this over capacity, it doesn't bode well for plans to expand.

3) Poor signage at the airport. There are seemingly no signs to the DART station in the terminal building, or on the signposts outside. Everything else is signposted; bus stops, car park, taxi rank etc., but DART hasn't been added to any of them. There's also no obvious signage visible from the terminal building exit on the station. Despite arriving by DART and having perfect vision; I simply could not see or find the Airport DART station and had to ask a member of staff (who spoke such poor English he was unable to direct me, but simply vaguely pointed in the direction).

I thought my boycott of Luton due to the bus situation would now be over but, the above outlined how stressful and unenjoyable the DART is. It's a lot better than the bus, but we've gone from a 1/10 to about a 4/10. Stansted and Gatwick remain kings of the budget airline airports.

Most of the time there are just a handful of people on board, and the frequency and journey time are far better than the bus. There are likely to be peaks as there are on other forms of transport but these are going to be quite brief.

Agreed. Only once you've arrived at the Airport's DART entrance (I knew where to find it!) can you see the large "DART" sign; until then it's obscured from view by a canopy.

What is it with poor signage? St Pancras had poor signage when it re-opened in 2007, Heathrow Terminal 5 was also awful, and I believe T2 had issues. Now this!

I used to work for a company who did "customer journey mapping" - essentially going through a process, or something like an airport and pointing out where things went wrong. I read a few reports and there were always glaring, obvious problems.

It's because the people designing it are too involved in the process, they assume other people know what they do. Some of it is genuine mistake too, like the oyster readers at Farringdon, things fall down the gaps between contractors.

The branding for the DART leaves a lot to be desired. The logo in itself is ok but the sign over the gate line on those photos looks like a kid knocked it up on an early BBC computer.

As for the ticket machines and gate line themselves, the one thing you obviously need at a time critical interchange is no queues and ease of transfer. They are spending hundreds of thousands marketing this as a super quick option from London but can’t see they need a few more gates??

Gates are used quite effectively by London Underground to regulate flows, so if the gates contain people so as not to overload the waiting area then that's good. If it means people are being held up and missing the DART that's clearly not good.

Yes I hope this is in part down to a 'soft launch' where they weren't trying to get in the crowds. Should be easy to fix
