luton airport cheap train tickets

Hello,
I am trying to find out the cheapest option for train tickets. We are 2 adults with 2 kids under 5. We can travel from West Sutton (eventually from sutton) to Luton airport. We must arrive at about 19:00 on 10.9.2014 to luton airport and we are coming back on 30.9.2014 at 8:00am. We don't have any railcards. We don't mind if the journey is a bit longer. Please could you give us any advise?

Please can I check that you prefer to travel from West Sutton but could travel from Sutton if this was cheaper/better?

I ask because "eventually" in English means something different from eventuel in German, éventuellement in french, etc., which mean roughly "or if necessary" in English!

Someone else will be able to give an answer about costs, I'm sorry I can't access the information at the moment.

There is a direct train from West Sutton or Sutton to Luton Airport. If you change at London Blackfriars (same platform) you may be able to get a slightly quicker train (save 15 minutes or so - it probably isn't worth changing). The Sutton trains usually stop at more stations north of London.

Unless you travel an hour or two early to Luton, and an hour or two late going back to Sutton, you will need peak tickets. Tickets would just be two adults Anytime (non-same day) Returns. Children under 5 years are free.

Unfortunately the 'group' ticket they sell requires at least three adults. And the bus from the train station to the airport is not free.

It would probably be worth buying a Family and Friends Railcard which reduces the adult fares by 34%, but you would have to pay for a ticket for one of the children to qualify.

Would a two-together railcard not be suitable because of the peak time?

Two Together railcards are not valid before 0930 on weekdays (excluding bank holidays).

Besides which, the F&F railcard is a better deal, given only one cardholder needs to be present, and there's no photograph on it.

Family & Friends Railcards are also time restricted on weekday mornings in the Network railcard area, not being valid before Off Peak Day tickets are available.
