Lumo West Coast fares

For anyone with staff travel facilities, note that Lumo West Coast will have no agreement in place for the acceptance of any staff travel facilities on their services. This includes active and retired staff.

Apparently this also includes any permitted fares with a priv discount
I know it's unlikely that these fares will be sold before Lumo Officially set a start date for their West Coast services, but maybe a brief should be sent warning all Staff regarding this being the case.

There was one sent out to us that was a National Rail update.

and it warns systems will sell Priv rate tickets for Lumo services in error !!
"in error" meaning noone can be bothered to do the bare minimum and add one new restriction to prevent it in the data.

It would take all of 5 minutes.

Exactly. I know myself (being an enthusiast, hence a member of this Forum!) that Lumo won't be accepting Priv Tickets, but other colleagues may not be aware and could happily issue Off Peak/Anytime Lumo Only tickets in advance without seat reservations.

I wonder how long that will last, especially as you can use Priv discounts on Lumo East Coast.

Is the Priv acceptance reciprocal? Do Lumo East Coast staff get Priv themselves while West Coast won't?

Can't imagine it will be too long. Almost think it might be a paperwork issue! I think the only OAO that held out for any appreciable period of time on staff travel was Grand Central where it wasn't permitted for a number of years when they began operating (I want to say ten years or so?) as their staff didn't get Priv at that point. Once they got Priv sorted then staff travel was accepted.
I've long wondered why Lumo East Coast and Lumo West Coast have different TOC codes as I can't otherwise see why this would be. This is probably one explanation :)
That may only be temporary so I'm not sure I'd read much into that:
Just because there's a new operator code now does not mean that there will be when they come to operate train services. The GC NW services at the start Covid were intended to go back to GC codes. I will talk to Lumo.

From what I've been told, it's staying as LF as they are entirely different operating entities.

Can someone sense check that this is correct? I am not convinced that these fares can be right given huge split ticketing opportunities exist from Day 1!

RouteDirect FareOptimal Split RouteSplit CostTotal Savings
London Euston to Nuneaton£60.00London Euston → Milton Keynes (£25.00)
Milton Keynes → Nuneaton (£17.50)

£8.00£2.00 (20%)
Motherwell to Greenfaulds£5.00Motherwell → Whifflet (£1.50)
Whifflet → Greenfaulds (£2.00)
£3.50

(Note: The London to Nuneaton split can also be cascaded. London to Crewe direct is £69.00, but splitting at both Milton Keynes and Nuneaton brings the cumulative cost down to £67.50).

By splitting three tickets together, you can beat the direct fares on mid-to-long distance routes south of the Scottish border.

JourneyDirect FareOptimal Cascading Split RouteSplit CostTotal Savings
London Euston to Preston£92.00London Euston → Milton Keynes (£25.00)

Is it possible there will be PU/SD only restrictions in the timetable instead, perhaps?

I am wondering if no free/reduced rate travel on this Open Access Operator is really such a problem for Staff with Safeguarded Facilities .. There are other alternatives using established operators. (Avanti, LNER, Scotrail etc)

The losers in this will be staff employed by Lumo-West Coast, but it will of been by their choice to have chosen to seek employment with an Open Access Operator. Rather than seek employment under the GBR umbrella.

My recollection is that Lumo East Coast were similar when they commenced but there was a note on RST later that they were now party to facilities.
Could it possibly be because it takes time for their own staff to be signed up by RST, which is what triggers the reciprocal facilities?

It looks like Lumo West Coast have start selling tickets from mid-July. Some very low prices.
What dates? I've had a look on Journey Planner for Preston to Euston on Lumo in July and can't see any. Thanks.

Edit: I can see they're available directly via the Lumo Website. Not sure why Journey Planner isn't picking them up unless there's a time delay in it updating?

I guess it will be similar to when Lumo started on the East Coast with some dirt cheap tickets available at first to get bums on seats (similar to the £19.90 advances), and once settled in they will increase prices owing to the shorter trains compared to Avanti

Yes I was wondering how many cheaper Advance tickets they'll be offering on their 6 car trains. Having said that, I guess with them being 100% Standard Class there could in theory be a good chance of them being offered when booking say at least a week or two in advance.

From a quick look, Preston London is 23.90, exept for the 9am which is 31.20, seems very reasonable, for comparison the best i got in the rail sale was £35 return from Liverpool. Although surely urely they aren't loosing the cheapest bookings already, its going to be packed on the day.

Says here that fare for the entire route Euston->Stirling starts from £29.90
£29.90 is the absolute cheapest tier of standard class Advance Single with Lumo. A walk up Anytime Day Single from London Euston to Stirling with Lumo is £96.00. Still undercuts the £97.50 (route Any Permitted) Super Off Peak Single by some £1.50.

There are advances available from late July to early September on the Lumo app, from Crewe to Euston, from £9.90 each way, without a railcard.
The app is a bit clunky, and it helps to have the Lumo timetable open and search just slightly before scheduled departure.

I’m trying to understand the fares, but not getting very far based on the limited information available, so I’m hoping someone can assist.

(I’ve tried looking at brfares.com and can’t make sense of it)

My local newspaper has been boasting that Lumo fares for my regular journey (Carlisle to Euston) “start at £25.90 for a single journey between Carlisle and London” but I have no idea if that is accurate, and I’m assuming that’s for an advance ticket.

Currently, I book my regular Avanti journeys in advance, and consistently pay around £95-100 for the return journey.

If I have to travel down for a meeting at relatively short notice then I’m screwed, as the cost is randomly anywhere from £160-£225.

Can those of you who understand ticketing and brfares.com better than me, give me a rough idea of what a short notice ‘walk in’ fare would be from Carlisle to Euston please?

Thanks

£150 Anytime Return, £94 Anytime Day Single. They don't appear to price an Off Peak for that flow. Quite reasonable to be fair!

There may still be Advances on the day though.

The cheapest walk up fares (non-advances) are a:
£94.00 Lumo only Anytime Day Single
£150.00 Lumo only Anytime Return (return within 1 month).

There are 26 different prices for the Advanced tickets (called LUMOFIXED on BR fares).
They go from £87.90 at highest to £25.90 at lowest - there's not really any way to know where these will generally be, it's entirely Lumo's choice which ones they offer and in what quantity.

Railcards to apply and can make all of the above cheaper.

Could anyone tell me if it’s cheaper to take Avanti, TransPennine or Lumo between Carlisle and Preston and Carlisle and Motherwell?

Quite difficult to compare as not all operators offer the exact same ticket type, but Lumo is generally cheapest, followed by TPE, then Avanti (as they set the flexible tickets so can't do an Avanti-only flexible ticket). Advances, your mileage will vary.
