I’ve bought 2 returns with a Two together railcard Newcastle to King’s Cross travelling with lumo, booked through their app. It has applied the railcard discount to both legs but the outbound departs at 0757 on a Monday. Is this ticket valid?

Irrespective of the rules if it's been sold to you alongside an itinerary it's valid by default.

What fare are you being charged for those?

Return was booked as 2 lumo fixed tickets each way under as one booking reference

Totally fine, no restriction on advance fares.

This is incorrect. A Two Together Railcard cannot be useed to obtain discounted travel before 09:30 on Mondays to Fridays, regardless of ticket type.

If the ticket has been sold by an approved retailer, with an itinerary (which appears to be the case) then it must be accepted.

2 Together Railcards aren’t valid before 09:30 on weekdays. The tickets are likely to be rejected by the ticket gates at Newcastle Central, and despite this correct fact:
Irrespective of the rules if it's been sold to you alongside an itinerary it's valid by default.
you may well have a job on your hands getting to your train.

It's Worldline WebTIS, though Lumo have tried to hide the Mixing Deck interface

Attempting to recreate this on the Lumo and GWR sites just now, it's correctly showing no Railcard discount applies for the 0757 departure from Newcastle.
Is it the same on mobile though? OP said they used the app. I thought I could repro it yesterday, but the app made it hard to check (doesn't expose the ticket type code anywhere).

Edit: App (UI at least) is Future Platforms. Not sure if it uses some sort of Worldline APIs...

Yes was booked through the app. Trying random days some allow the discount, others don’t.

Not sure what's special about the 23rd. R9 is pretty straightforward.

So why it is applying a railcard discount when it’s not permitted? If i was just booking a single, I more than likely would have noticed. As I booked it as a return journey I presumed it would have only applied the railcard to the return leg where it was valid like every other app/booking site

Could it be related to LumoFlex tickets being setup as Advances that have to be booked by 23:59 the day before travel, despite the name, which is confusing retail systems?

It shouldn't. The restrictions on the Two Together Railcard apply to all ticket types.

Also, the OP doesn't seem to have booked any LumoFlex tickets.

Good point! I think there's definitely something weird going on with their product definitions though, as doing a search for today is only offering LumoFixed (i.e. Advance type tickets) or LumoAny (i.e. Anytime.)

YMMV, of course!

Lumo doesn't do off peak walk up fares so that is expected? Though it seems they may have renamed LumoFlex to LumoAny?

Logically I would have thought LumoFlex would be available until close to departure time, with LumoFixed having to be booked in advance...but evidently it's the other way round in this case.

BRFares shows the following for Newcastle - Kings Cross (Lumo options only):
  • Five tiers of Lumo + Hull Trains Advances priced at £53.90 to £64.90 (priced to both London Terminals and explicitly to Kings Cross)
  • 44 tiers of LumoFlex ranging from £16.40 to £68.70
  • 50 tiers of LumoFixed ranging from £14.90 to £68.90
  • An Anytime Day Single for £69.00
  • An Anytime Open Return (OR2 - Outward portion valid for 1 day, Return for 1 month) priced at £138.00

Doesn't answer why their app is randomly allowing a 2TR discount at invalid times, mind you!

It appears Lumo have been fiddling about:

Lumo is now offering LumoFlex, an all-new ticket option which offers greater flexibility on all our services on the London to Edinburgh route.

LumoFlex, which is a digital-only ticket, offers you more options to refund or amend your journey without hurting your wallet or the earth. The ticket’s benefits include reserved seating, fee-free change of journey* as well as a pre-departure fee-free refund if plans change**.

The new ticketing option parallels the freedom and flexibility often given by airlines tickets and is another step towards encouraging the greener alternative to flying.

Statistics from our recent ARUP report have found that travelling via a Lumo train is 95% greener than flying with a return journey from London to Edinburgh on a Lumo electric train saving the equivalent of 11 trees worth of annual CO2.

Commenting on the new offer, Lumo’s Head of Commercial, Tom McFall said: “This new product gives more choice so that customers can book with the peace of mind that if their plans change they can refund or rebook their ticket at no extra cost.

“Since launching at the end of 2021, we have been committed to offering customers great value fares, but we also recognise that customers increasingly want more flexible options. Our new LumoFlex product is designed to meet that need. In successfully delivering this ‘semi-flex’ product, which is the first of its kind in the UK rail industry, we’re giving customers the option to increase their flexibility.”

*Customers wishing to change their train on a LumoFlex ticket will be required to pay the fare difference from the original purchase price to the new fare level, but no other charges will apply..

**Subject to fare difference, and a £10 admin fee when changes are made on the day of travel.

Get the ticket of your choice here.

So LumoFlex is now a set of slightly higher Advance tiers that don't carry an admin fee for a change and are refundable less admin fee prior to departure of the booked train, and no longer an Anytime ticket.

What was called LumoFlex is now called LumoAny, but is actually an Anytime Day Single or Anytime Open Return (the latter being one of those weird hybrids where the outward is only valid one day). The latter is priced at twice the single so exists for convenience only (are you listening, LNER? :) ).

Crikey. Way to make it even more confusing.

Can we go back to just having SuperAdvance, Apex and SuperApex for Advance Purchase fares please? They were easy to understand.

I'm sure LNER don't want to make things more confusing
