LUL A Stock

I needed some quiet time to do some reading today, so I decided to head off and take a ride on some LUL mainline stock (A stock) from Baker Street to Amersham and back.

Quite brought back memories of the 70s except that the A stock rides somewhat better now on the CWR compared to the jointed track of those days.

Nothing to beat a good fast ride on an A series set of stock.

I have a certain "fondness" for the Met Summer evenings in the 70s spent bombing up and down the Met in the mainline stock, bouncing around all over the place.

All those young Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire girls in their summer dresses on their way home from the City

The Piccadilly was good as well when they had locomotives !

Anyway on Tuesday I had reason to report 5023 on train 013 to Aldgate, to a member of station staff for having wheelflats. Not sure if the message got passed on though.

OT, Sir, although I have no doubt that it shall not be the same, I am glad that I grew up riding the A stocks, and will be able to remember doing so when I am older and wiser - (and remember the girls in the summer ;D )

I can almost assure you that a member of station staff wouldn't report a train for having wheelflats

All of the units are routinely checked, and I am sure that it will have been noted somewhere and 5023 will find its way to Neasden wheel lathe.

Having seen in person how many bogies they have lined up there, I know they do actually do some work (I have a picture somewhere, but I will leave that for another day)!

I went on a 165 from Marylebone to Amersham on a wet December in 2005, and an A-stock train back to Baker Street. The seats on the A-stock are certainly comfortable, while the trains themselves have aged well even though they're past 40 years old. In fact, I equally enjoyed the 165 and the A-stock unit! It's pretty stupid though that the S-stock units replacing them will have fewer seats (meaning more standees).

Aren't these LUL drivers SO miserable ?

I watched them do a relief and one hardly spoke to the other, and both looked so bloody miserable.

Maybe its the confined cab, which does seem to be incredibly tiny !

No I have seen it before at Acton Town on the Piccadilly several years back now when I used to travel to West London regularly.

It struck me then as being a sort of LUL thing.

This recent episode just stirred a forgotten memory.
