Luggage storage in London

Does anyone have any experience of luggage storage in London (ideally near Kings Cross) where I can leave a bag during the day before checking in to my hotel in the evening (and the reverse when I check out)

I know the official Excess Baggage Company storage at the station can be expensive, it seems loads of slightly dodgy looking shops offer luggage storage, is it all easy to use and above board?

The Stasher app isn't a bad bet. It offers among other places Premier Inns, which should be reputable.

Or ask the hotel. Most will for free.

A decent hotel would allow you to store your luggage before and after check in, but if that service isn't available (eg Travelodge) then I'd recommend paying the money for legit luggage storage at KX.
I certainly wouldn't recommend going to some dodgy general store on Caley Rd or even worse, on Gray's Inn Rd, where the services on offer also include selling pre-rolled joints and NO² canisters to school kids (allegedly)

Just to confirm my trip is a bit impromptu so a bit more budget than normal, I’m staying in zone 3 so wouldn’t want to go back and forth to the hotel, and secondly it’s a Travelodge so they don’t do luggage storage anyway.

There's a Premier Inn right by Kings Cross that I've used multiple times for luggage storage through Stasher. Might cost more than the "dodgy" places, but possibly less than the place in the station?

I haven't used King's Cross but the official baggage storage option at Euston only charges £15 for 1 piece with morning drop off and early evening collect. Personally didn't think that was too unreasonable but I appreciate that is subjective. For info, some hotels will happily take your luggage pre-check in so there might be a free option - although in my experience very few things are free in London!

Wow! Stasher at a Premier Inn will cost less than £6. Always my go-to.

Stasher is a great takeaway from this thread. I've previously used Bounce, but they recommend the most dubious places (mostly convenience stores!)

100% Stasher app! I've used it all over Europe and never had any problems. They have lots of locations close by major rail stations so you don't have to wander far. My particular favourite for Euston is the Exmouth Arms on Starcross Street. Before picking up your suitcase you can have a pint and a very nice smash burger!
