luggage on seats !!

yesterday fri 7 oct i caught the 12.53 Derby to Birmingham new st voyager as i walked down the coach i noticed mainly female passengers with a case or bag on the window seat and the women sat on the outside seat, ive also noticed blokes do the same , what anoyys me is some passengers stand in the vestibule , not me a told this women that seat isnt for luggage, we would have more seats if ignorant passengers would not use seats as a luggage rack.

also cant some people read no mobiles in the quiet coach..

Yeah, they either want their luggage close to them, or it's just so no one sits next to them, a selfish act either way, if there's space on the rack, use it.

I don't see how it's "selfish" if there are plenty of other seats. I often put my bag on the seat next to me, but will move it if the train gets crowded, as I'm sure would most people.

Or under the seat. You can fit a reasonably sized bag, that would be too large for the fairly thin luggage racks on Voyagers, under the seat without encroaching on your own legroom or that of the person sitting behind you.

It's certainly irritating to see people putting bags on seats when there is absolutely no need for it. I appreciate that people like to be able to stow their bags where they can keep an eye on them, but to have people standing in the vestibules when only perhaps 80% of the seats in the train are occupied by people is a bit silly. If everybody moved them off the seat though when/if the train became busy, then it wouldn't be so much of a problem though.

The real issue is whether the powers that be have acted to ensure this does not apply to new purchases and refurbishments.

no women passengers don't !! unless i tell them to move it they are crafty by putting a bag on the window seat and sitting on the isle seat ..

there is an argument to this that is that it's a good thing to stop people using cars and one of the issues with taking public transport is the chance of having someone sat next to you that you'd never choose to have in your car. so if there's space then there's no problem with luggage on seats (so long as it doesn't damage the seats) until it starts to leave people standing who otherwise wouldn't

Absolutely, that is what I do. And if the only seats left are ones where you would have to sit next to someone, I always pick a seat with a bag on it.

When travelling home out of Kings Cross in an evening, it always makes me laugh when you get non-commuters get on with their luggage and arrange it around them on empty seats. You know full well that before the train leaves that they will end up having to move them, and will have to move them through a full train.

I jumped onto a Cambridge train yesterday a couple of minutes before it left, and the only two seats together were around a table, where two of the seats were being used as storage for two massive suitcases. Their owners were not at all happy at having to move them to the (empty) luggage racks, but they did move them.

Desmond Morris would have probably attributed it to our territorial instincts. If there are no tables available I usually put my pet microwave on one of the overhead luggage racks.

This is far more the problem in my view. There are certain trains which are seriously deficient.

It annoys me when people think they have a right to sit at a table simply because there are more than one of them travelling

If I see someone with a bag I ask them to move it, if they don't I ask again but let them know I will forcibly move it if necessary

That's what I do, just ask people of I can have the seat their bag is on, or ask people to move across if they are sitting next to an empty window seat.


Although, as I'm quite skinny if the train has 2+3 seating like the 377s I commute on I go for the middle seat. There's always a couple of them free

On Wednesday a middle aged female was sitting in the aisle seat. The window seat adjacent was empty, apart from a newspaper and a book, and was the last remaining empty seat when I got on. Some other passengers had decided to stand in the vestibule and the coach end, but I asked her if the seat was free.

She clearly didn't want anyone to sit there, but she did move her belongings, and the suitcase at her feet, and allow me in. I took great satisfaction in knowing that her plan to have two seats to herself had not worked!

The number of people who so this never ceases to amaze me. Yes, there ar einsufficient luggage facilities on many trains, but even so, it's selfish behaviour at it's best.

Maybe some of the more NKVD inspired revenue staff could start issuing a penalty fare to people who's luggage occupies a seat that could be taken up by a fare paying passenger who is standing.

I got on a nearly full train a couple of weeks ago and as normal just try to grab the first available seat. I asked a woman if the seat next to her was free but she said it was occupied, so I moved down a litlle and got the next one. More people come along and ask her the same thing and get the same answer. We depart and no one appears to occupy the seat.

So? You don't have a god-given right to a window seat. It's first come first served.

Maybe the guy wanted to look out of the window. I much prefer that than having to stair at the back of the seat in front.

In asking him if he would prefer to sit in the aisle seat, you were being polite. In deliberately trying to inconvenience him, you were not. He had first choice of seats; why is that a reason to be unpleasant?

Only joking - I generally throw them in the bin when I have finished with them.

I was wondering if any guards have come across any discarded mircowaves (or any other assorted household electrical appliances on their trains yet? - someone left one of those huge old ferguson 32" televisions on a train I was working once - got some of the lads to help us to cart it down the messroom only to find it didn't work. Still sent it off to Lost Property. These days the job would be shut down if such a thing was left behind)

So when the "gripper" came through. I loudly said to him - "I think that bag's been abandoned - the lassie sitting there says it belongs to another passenger, but they've never returned for it"

Just ask them to move it. If they wont move it, then move it for them.


Grand Central make an announcement to the effect that any bags on seats will be charged at a full open fare. That seems to work!

That's a good idea for those who want to keep people away. Leave a box of writhing groundbait on the seat next to you and you will reduce the amount of people prepared to sit there.
