A question for LU ( & other metro system) unit haulage bashers. How do you get your units for haulage? Do you for example do front unit from Wimbledon to W'don Park then the rear unit to Southfields and get the next train and do the same again? Or do you just do them on journeys you'd be making anyway? What do you do when like on the Central one train is 4 x 2 car units? In the post on Paris Peter states he does these for haulage and I just wondered how you went about getting/counting them.

I log LU journies on railmiles. I put the LCN in the TOPS1 field, and other LCN's in the other TOPS fields - but I only put cars in which have a driving cab, (leaving the central with 3 TOPS numbers IIRC).

For the Vic, for example, I'd put:

TOPS1 - 3151
TOPS2 - 3051
TOPS3 - 3197
TOPS4 - 3097

That way on RM it shows which unit I've acctually been on, but I can also view which ones I've had in consist on a train.

That's kinda like asking what do you count as haulage in any other D(E)MU. I just count the whole train.

Indeed; it's no different from multiple units running in...erm...multiple. I don't count trains for haulage (unless it's 67 stock on which I'm looking to see what's left) but most people I know will take all the unit numbers which are part of the train (eg. a 12-car 350 they will take down three numbers).

Also, I've moved this thread to the right forum as it's not really NR.

I'm asking how you count the haulage, not how you record it.

Read what I've written. I've already answered you.

LCN as TOPS1 showing that's the one I've ridden on. But record the ones I've had in consist.

Speaking personally if it's in the consist and it has moved with me on board then I count it.

Although not appliciable on the Underground, I do differentiate between powered and loco hauled carriages on my main line notes, to indicate that the carriages are not powered*.

*In a bit of a hangover from steam days when everything was pulled by something I mark a powered haulages as (P) for pulled by and a carriage as (R) for ride. Just for completeness, I should add that I also use (C) if I have visited the cab ( including passing through the cab area on a coupled gangwayed unit ) and for the Sleeper trains I will mark the carriages I have actually had a berth in with (S) as well as (R). Finally, the rarest and most coveted note is, of course, (d) and perhaps my most prized such note is the A4 pacific Sir Nigel Gresley... :) It should be pretty obvious what (d) stands for...

As long as the unit is actually powering I count it for haulage irrespective of which unit I was travelling in. If for example I was travelling on a train made up of several DMUs and I knew one of them wasnt powering (eg failed) I wouldn't count the non-powering unit.

i'm afraid I am prob one of the few and count London underground units seperately wether rightly or wrongly. If I am on my own I will do "bus-stop" moves but if with someone else I will do what I am in came in handy on the victoria line this week as had a winner depsite been in the other units a couple of weeks earlier

Regarding Underground units, I always note the actual car number travelled in regardless of whether it has a driving cab / is powered etc. There is no way I would bother to try and get them all "in the book", the only reason for writing the car number down is just to save leaving the unit / loco number column in my haulage spreadsheet blank.

Well, you can regard them in the same way as the main line units in that they are fixed formation. In most cases the trains consist of two units. Some are three but the Central is a bit of a nightmare as each train is actually formed of four 2 car units ( which probably gives rise to the only cabless two car units in the world??? ).

To save paper I tend to write down only one car ( or abbreviation ) per unit, as a unique identifier, thus:

Bakerloo Line: 32xx and 34xx numbers.
Central Line: 92xxx numbers.
District Line: 17xxx numbers.
H&C / Circle Line: 5xxx numbers.
Jubilee Line: 96xxx numbers.
Met Line: Lower numbered 5xxx number ( A stock ) or 21xxx numbers ( S stock ).
Northern Line: 51xxx numbers.
Picadilly Line: Centre cars of each unit.
Victoria Line: Last two digits ( 67 stock ) or 11xxx numbers ( 09 stock ).

In theory the S stock trains are single permanent units that, unlike other pairings, will never be split so in theory I should only need to note the lower of the two 21xxx numbers in each train. But I'm not quite sure I trust them to never split the formations, so I treat them as if they were two units paired.

Already there is a 'mis-formed' S Stock in London!

While 21011+21012 were in Berlin a car from this train was inserted into 21013+21014, so 21013+21014 is currently running around with an M2 car out of correct formation.

Full formations:
21011-22011-23013-24011-24012-25012-22012-21012
21013-22013-23011-24013-24014-25014-22012-21014

Why was this done?

Not really sure of the reason, just that cars 25012 and 23011 were left at Derby while 21011-22011-24011+24012-22012-21012 visited Berlin.

Maybe car 23013 developed a fault as 21013+21014 were about to be dispatched from Derby??

I only count 2 or more numbers if it is a loco i.e double/triple etc headed or push/pull like HST power cars (ones that are dead/switched off aren't counted though) but for units I only count the unit I am in and not any others.

For LU, each train is formed of various sets, but they have their own number rather than a 'overall' number, so I just count the coach I am in. There is rules on top of that.

Example, if 5501+5601+5571+5671+5505+5605 is on some circle line turn, and I board 5571 I will count that (if it is required) but I won't count any of the rest. If I get off 5571 and leap into 5671 I won't count it as I will only count one coach UNTIL it changes 'headcode' and starts a new trip, then I will count the other coach.

I need a hell of a lot for haulage but it'll keep me going! I did actually spend a few minutes on the Central line between Queensway and Marble Arch going back and forth scooping in '92 stock cars!

One set I am fed up of seeing at the moment on the Circle line is 5556+5555, ALWAYS out without fail when I am out!

James.
