LU Drivers - Best lines/depots to work for/at?

To the LU drivers who've switched from ATO to manual lines, or vice versa, which do you prefer?

Does the ATO driving become monotonous, or do you prefer it?

This is hopefully still relevant to the OP's original question.

I'd say about 70 to 80 % of LU ATO drivers preferred manual driving under signals. Generally people find it can actually be more tiring keeping alert on a long ATO duty, and as ATO generally comes with a more intense timetable it also generally means less turnround time too which is a particular bugbear on some lines - especially the Northern at the moment.

Of the remaining 20 to 30 % this includes quite a lot of people for whom ATO has probably kept them in a driving job thanks to their SPAD history when driving under signals. You can also include a few "old hands" too who have simply got to the point where they've had enough of having to actually drive the train!

Certainly on the Northern there have been a large number of transfers in particular to the Met Line, in many cases involving individuals who had been on the line for some time (so in other words not people moving for personal reasons). It's hard to pin down how much of this is due to disliking ATO as opposed to other factors. The brisk turnarounds on the Northern may well have been more of a factor than ATO per se.

Does any body know if there is parking available for drivers at any of the depots?

Which locations ?

Most depots have at least some staff parking.
