Personally I would like to see a complete ban on food and drink on the underground (throw in the free newspapers as well) but I just do not see how this is going to be possible given the limitations of staff, police manpower and the attitude of the travelling public.

What you really need is to ban passengers, which solves ALL of the above problems. May be controversial, but it would work.

Fair point but when one considers what happened at Kings Cross in 1989, then I think most would consider the smoking ban justifiable.

I think most people's attitude to eating and drinking on the underground is an unquestionable right.

I am aware of a case on New Years eve at a major location where a solitary local BTP officer together with the station manager were stood at the top of the escalator with a bag to collect alcohol for disposal. In this case it was said to have been much easier as everyone is aware of the ban there was less disagreement when it was given up.

Most locations do have signs located by the station entrance; the ones which have the details of London Underground HQ, No Smoking and other info. on them. They don't stand out but do exist.

No, as I said he's not fine. The 'boarder' between FCC & LUL at Farringdon is the train door (for now). He should/could be challenged at any point once off the train.

Just to show how unworkable this rule is, come the new ITH at Farringdon which opens around December, you can enter one entrance to Farringdon drinking but not the other (as the booking hall will be Thameslink not Crossrail's) but once you head down the escalators from the platform level to Crossrail you're then back in the ban part.

Simply put this ban is unworkable and was done as a knee jerk reaction by Boris.

I don't think you've read the OP correctly - the passenger got *on* the train at Farringdon and then opened his can. So he's not off the train to challenge.

I agree that the ban's fairly pointless - the people who obey it aren't the ones who would cause trouble anyway. The ones who would cause trouble pay no attention to the ban.

Unfortunately that would be a health hazard, you cant ban people from drinking water when they are hot! In the DC Metro, I had to get off at stations to drink my water then get back on again!
