Anyone know what’s going on with the 4TC set that’s been dumped in a siding since the end of September? Rather surprised nothing seems to have happened, given last year it was in high demand for galas and railtours…

Although I am surprised that it hasn’t yet been recovered, a slight issue in Eastern Europe won’t be helping TfL and or whoever will be supplying its new wheelsets.

From what I've heard the reason it hasn't been recovered yet is that due to the severity of the wheelflats it cannot be skated back to West Ruislip and has to be retrieved by road , although I'm not sure on the truthfullness of this as I've never heard of a piece of rolling stock not being able to be skated before due to damage.

I assume the difficulty of getting it back on skates would be finding a time to get a 5MPH path back to West Ruislip Without other conflicting paths or Engineering works as I presume it would have to be at night.

However regarding wheelsets , couldn't they just pinch the wheelsets off some neglected mk1s sat at some heritage railway considering they use the same wheelsets.

I suspect there are discussions going on about liability with H&H (and potentially their insurers too) which may be taking some time.

The other thing to consider is are TfL going to spend lots of money on this as it is not main-stream activity (and they are strapped for cash anyway) !

The TC4 and Sarah Siddens are the LT museum heritage train.
They were recently overhauled at Eastleigh from
The TC4 was used on some galas and the Great Gathering at Derby, so strange the wheels were damaged? Presumably on the return from Derby by H&H?
Hopefully the insurance will pay for repairs?

It was on its way to Barking for the BLS tour to Heysham etc. last autumn when the incident happened.

Given how much of a money earner it is for TfL Heritage (galas, events, railtours) on top of its own LT runs, I would say it’s likely that TfL Heritage would be very keen on keeping their TC running until such a time when a suitable replacement can be found.

As above, the wheelsets were damaged during the ECS for the UK Railtours “Ulster Express” on the 27th of September last year, when it was being hauled from Princes Risborough to Barking via Wembley Yard. As DB also supplied a loco I wonder if it’s a complicated 3 way issue between TfLH, Hanson and Hall and DB.

The wheelflats appear to be on one of the leading vehicles coupled up to the 92, which would tally with a handbrake not being wound off in the cab.

The damage occurred between Princes Risborough and Barking as posted by @fgwrich

The damage occurred between Wembley and Barking. A handbrake was left on, there's no allegedly about it (appreciate you didn't say this bit, just for general context.)

The earnings are relatively marginal once the wider costs of owning and maintaining it - LU's own trips just about break even and the wider business case for heritage operations is - sadly - tricky to justify.

The arguments over this ( insurers always quibble don't they?! ) are probably part of the reasons it's taking so long.
Whilst I won't comment on the specifics, it is worth mentioning that the heritage fleet is looked after by the same team who look after the Rail Adhesion Trains. October through December is their busiest time of year (understandably), and January into February is also when many of them are taking accrued leave. This is the biggest factor in the set's extended stay.

Thank you for mentioning this part, I had a feeling that was the case but didn’t want to add it in case I was wrong. As it usually doesn’t have much in the way of “booked work” shall we say until the late spring and summer months, I can imagine there’s less of a rush to bring it back yet with the priority being the LU RATS first. Just hope it’s safe and sound out in Ripple Lane as we know how some of the London yards can be.

I doubt there is any actual profit in these activities - there cetrainly is no profit in attending galas, only costs !
And the question of insurance mentioned above - are these things actually insured ? Surely the risk is far too great for any insurance company and any policy costs would be unaffordable. In BR days, nothing was insured, BR took their own risk and paid for their own repairs. Have things changed ?

The 4TC will be moving later this week. On skates to the Freightliner depot, then driving trailers detached and will be going by road to Southall, the intermediate cars by rail.
Repairs will be undertaken at Southall to the damaged wheelsets.
Then the unit will be reformed and head to Eastleigh by rail for pre-arranged visit.

Many thanks for the update, that's good news. Hope it's not too expensive, well the road bit obviously will and wheelsets don't come cheap. It's a quality bit of rolling stock.

Thanks as well for the update. Would it appear as a last min move as it’s only going just down the road?

Would anyone know who’s moving it by rail this week ?

Hopefully not Hanson and Hall again

What did they do wrong then? I don't think the driver is responsible for checking parking/hand brakes on the stock if there's a guard on the train, their job I would've thought

Very good news, it'll be nice to have it back

Can they give it a quick repaint whilst they are at it? Blue Grey or Network SouthEast would be nice!

The unit was brought to make a heritage train on the Metropolitan line, so maroon is suitable.
At one point was teak.
There are few original Metropolitan line carriages, some on the Bluebell line and sometimes make or into London.
The LU 4TC has also done several rail tours to the Swanage line diesel gala. It ran push pull with loco 33111 to recreate one of the last trains on the Swanage lines. Last year it did not make it and the Bluebell lines 4VEP unit made it to the Swanage gala, but could not take passengers on the mainline.

It's possible Swanage's own Blue Grey livery 4TC, or rather 3TC, may finally appear at the 2026 gala in May? Has taken several years to restore. But also can't take passengers on the mainline, so there is a remote possibility the LU 4TC might run one in May?

That’s would be amazing to see 2 TC sets together! Such amazing work by the people restoring the Swanage set!

Is there any news on what day it’s being moved?

The TC's have B5(S) bogies which have different wheelsets than B4 bogies found under Mark 1's so not interchangeable.

Fully get all that - just a personal preference for me. Never liked it in teak or LT maroon. I think it looks daft, IMO. A prototypical refresh livery wise would still draw in the crowds perhaps more so given how long it’s had its current guise for

Hyperbole alert!!! "Draw in the crowds"... really? Perhaps a few photographers. Photographers who contribute zero in the way of revenue - so not exactly an enticing business proposition!
