Kind words Tech, cheers mate.

The 195s and 331s, 26 in total between them, obviously made up the lions share of requirements but that was the main aim of the trip. Make hay while the sun shined.

I've obviously jumped on a point here. How did the Zing become so popular. It must be an age thing Mr Xot?

For those of us who grew up riding behind Peaks (none of your Deltic, Whistler or Duff nonsense on the Midland Main Line, thank goodness) they are the next best thing these days - anything but a Voyager or a Meridian.

I'm the last person to give a reason why HSTs have become popular. It baffles me!

Just thinking, when you get yourself down to that London the new sightings will be approaching four-figures. They've got new classes of unit down there left, right and centre. But I bet none of them have comfortable seats.

Last time in London I got over 300 new sightings in 3 days Mr Xot. Stratford and Stratford International, Blackfriars, Clapham, London Bridge, Wilesden Junction, Marleybone, Finsbury Park and Ealing Broadway. Covered most TOC's in and out of London. I've still got great swathes of requirements down there though.
If I go to East Anglia, like I did when the 37s and 68s were on? I went via London, filled my boots there and then rode up on 90s. Jumped aboard the 37s and 68s, stayed a couple of days riding the loco hauled turns including the 90s and came back via Ely for a few hours on Peterborough picking off the freight and the units to the Cross.

Skymonster each to their own on whatever floats ye boat. I'd have all that nonsense before i set foot on a peak. However I'd sooner ride a peak than a zing. However those who love the HSTs, doesnt make them bad people. I know a load who love em and they're good people. I think it's those of us who saw them decimate loco hauled turns in the day, cant rise above a grudging respect but certainly cant ever forgive them.

You're going to love it on the Great Eastern and around Anglia in general now then, there's so many new trains for you to get! Granted, a lot of the 720s have yet to enter service but they're ramping up quite a bit. I've already got more than 10% of the 720/5s in the book without too much effort. Only 3 of them for haulage yet mind, but that will change before too long.

Of course there's all the 710s as well, plenty of those, and no doubt you'll still need a load of 345s and 700s yet too. Soon enough (hopefully) the 701s will enter service too, so even more new stuff to get there one day.

The honourable Mr xot, he is not wrong, the seats aren't terribly comfortable on the new trains but I had no major issue with them. After much walking around and, in some cases this week (trying not to produce spoilers for my trip report  ) racing from Tube line to another or similar, I wasn't too bothered about the comfort. Just having a seat was nice enough!

I've not posted on the forums for absolutely ages but felt I needed to post here. Great to read your reports once again. I've dipped in and out of the forums in the last few years and rarely post. Seems to have got more toxic in the last few years.

My interest hasn't wained much but a little one and the pandemic has halted me doing much getting away, but I really want to get out after reading that. Great read and glad to see you're enjoying it.
Just catching up on these trip reports 47403, a good read, have to say agree with what Noddy says.
Hopefully with restrictions eased more of us will post various bashing/spotting/track or station chasing reports.

The forum software seems to lock threads so quickly these days. Could this be altered in the trip reports type sections as some of us might go months or years without posting anything of relevance or import. Nobody for example wants to hear about my long dreary routine of flight at stupid oclock in the morning, work in London, hotel, possibly somewhere interesting and affordable like Kent followed by doing the whole thing backwards multiple times which in in all honesty Dr is all I have done for months other than perhaps the odd afternoon here and there when I've arrived early for a work trip and have gone round London playing with stuff on a paper travel card which conveniently covered my fair in from whichever airport has landed at as

Still Keeping an Eye on Things
Afternoon all. Theres nothing too exciting to report as in the way of travel within this waffle but the other half and my good self do go and sit by the ECML from time to time. Theres a good spot not far from my house near King Edward Bridge South Junction, where we can view proceedings. The 156s and 158s going onto or coming off the Tyne Valley, as well as the mainline stuff can be viewed from here too.

From this vantage point, it has allowed me to rope in all but 7 of LNER's Azumas. All 7 of those needed are of the 5 car variety of the Azumas. Maybe a trip to Donnie may help find them errant 6 801/1's and 800209, however the latter, may yet surface on the Heaton to Carlisle route refresher, as they seem to be using the 800/2s on that. So hope springs eternal. The TPE 802's and Lumos 803 have all bitten the dust. So If time allows, we try to get out for any tours that go by. We were out for a couple of steam tours, think one was Royal Scot a while back and more recently, the Duchess of Sutherland, Tyseley to Newcastle a week.or so ago. Made all that special, with 47773 leading the ECS back to Toon after servicing the stock and watering the the big Tea's maid at Tyne Yard. Although I must confess to not being a massive steam loco fan, I can see the romance of them, however, to be able to hear the Duchess puffing over the King Eddie Bridge, without actually being able to see it, was a moment I never thought I'd enjoy as much as I actually did. The whole rake of stock being needed for sight was a much needed boost too and many thanks to Johnathon on the tops request thread for filling in the 3 missing gaps amongst those without numbers too.

One of the things to pass time inbetween trains, is getting the other half how to distinguish the difference between 156s and 158s, finding out the number using the coach numbers has been fun. All was going well until a 156 and 158 went past double headed that completely threw her. It's now extended to identifying different classes of loco, as the lesser spotted freight goes by. Which was easy enough for her, as all we seem to see, is the odd 60 on the Jarrow Oil Tanks, a db shed on the Tees Mossend Modals and a Colas 56 or 70 on the Donnie Millerhill engineers turn. Imagine her surprise, when double headed 68s passed on the Seaton flasks, the first time round. Learning the phrases and terminology has, at times been hillairious and her nicknames to help her remind herself what they are is bizarre. A campervan for a 47 has me shaking my head o_O and getting bamboozled, instead of bowled but it's her rules. Who am I to tell anyone else how to do this hobby. We all have our own quirks on it.

I did get extremely lucky with the Tees to Mossend modal the other week. I needed some cash out the hole in the wall. At the bottom of the street and behind the post office is a view of the ECML, as I returned to the waiting car, in that said street, passing by on the embankment is none other 66181 on the Tees Modal. I just stood their eyes wide and my jaw on the floor, before my other half said, are you ok?. I just murmured, that's my last red shed needed for sight. I hadnt even planned to go and see what was on it either. Just extremely lucky but never the less extremely grateful that 66181 showed itself at long long last.

So that about as exciting as this gets sadly but it's now become a habit that gets us by the rails on a regular basis and it just nice to sit and chill there. Luckily we're out for a couple of days this week. So I'm sure, I'll happily let you know what happened then. Till then thanks for reading and watch out for a trip report. Until then, heres a pic of, for no other reason than cos I can, heres 37403 pushing out towards Barrow from Maryport, in the day when the 37s were on the Cumbrian Coast turns.20161005_093011-1.jpg
Have a good one folks.

Are the Cumbrian 37. Absolutely fantastic fun and a great way to travel when they work, complete uncontrolled chaos when they didn't.

I am sure the locals are missing the capacity if not the reliability now they are back to their standard diet of of 156s, now without the luxury of the occasional dog box on the end. Good to hear you're well and keeping busy and congratulations indeed on your last red shed

Yeah I bet they're missing them, I know I am and thanks. Seeing that last red shed was very spawny indeed.

Good to hear that you are enjoying your sessions camped out by the King Edward Bridge.

And only a couple of days to wait before you can grab yourselves a droplight and enjoy some classic EE and Sulzer thrash!

Nice to see that you're both keeping active on the scene, I think you two are following movements more than I do!

Love the name of Campervan for 47s, that made me smile! Bamboozled instead of bowled, that's pretty awesome too. "I got Bamboozled by a 158 when waiting for a 37!" sounds pretty funky!

Very nice work on the lucky spot of your last DB 66 as well, absolutely right place, right time :D

Definitely good to have you back, the same applies to you as it did the other day with Mr Train, it's just not the same around here but it sounds like things are on the up. Even I'm getting on the rails this week, and there may even be a winner involved. Depends what I decide tomorrow, forecast calls for rain and lots of it here on Thursday. So my plan to smash this month's big cycling challenge (1,250km) is out the window. A shame, as I'm on 1,071km. 665 miles according to Strava, but I need 111 more miles in 3 days. With an 8 hour shift tomorrow and a very wet Thursday. Another time for that one! So I'm going to jump on a train and go for an adventure!

Indeed Mr xot Thank you. You will probably know exactly where were sitting too. Not the exact place, we're just round the corner from where Gary Benjamen's photo has been taken from but you get the general area.

Will I get to see her flailing with the 37 cranks again like I did at the KWVR. I hope so. Shes 37 crazy. So with the possibility of 2 for haulage this week it took no convincing at all. As you can well imagine.

Theres some excellent places up in the North East to go cycling Tech. The coast to coast is allegedly a good one. Tynemouth or Sunderland right over to Workington. My younger brother and his mates done it a few years back. Theres also one that goes from Dunston all along the banks of the Tyne, past the Staithes and the Sage. The Derwenthaugh is quite popular too. Thers a great one in Blaydon that goes along an old track bed that was a line up from Blaydon to Stanley and Consett. I've been walking up there and watched the Red Kites and the odd buzzard flying round on the old viaduct, where the views are quite stunning.

Yeah Tech, thank you for the kind words. Be great if the old band could all do a few trip reports. I do share tales of old trip reports to the other half. Like Kite cycling between stations, to get all the stations, which she said, wow, hes been to every station!! Also sharing stories of meeting yourself and Blind Traveller and The Lord of Stafford in Toon. Sharing a few beers and riding the 67 with yourself in Hereford. A day I will never forget is Young Fishquinn running the legs off me round the Bat Cave, I think he forgot I was more than double his age   and running me round the different exits etc to pick off the units, christ I was knackered that day and when we went to meet his dad on the 68 turn to Leamington, I'd never been so happy to sit down in my life. I've got to say, I've met some really nice people through the forum and to put names to faces is always good.

Oh campervan reference has made a few folk smile, funnily enough. Everybody but me  I wonder why that could be. The 50s, she calls Monocle's so if your a hoover fan, there you go.

I'm not sure I see, from the mental image of a 50, how she came to Monocle for 50s! As for Campervan, I saw one pass the house yesterday afternoon and I can see where she's coming from  At least a 47 is more enjoyable than a VW Campervan, not a sentence I ever thought I'd type!

That spot looks like a cracking one, I can see why you go to that area. Aye my map for the Tyne area looks like it's going to offer so many options for cycling, I'm hoping to actually get up there again one day. I need to book time off work, and go for a proper good few days away. There's a number of 156s up your way I haven't been on yet, and the amount of Azumas etc I could score would be incredible. The majority of them would be scores for sight too!

Plenty of memories for me too, I do occasionally think about the time we did that 67 out of Hereford and indeed, the time we met in Newcastle for beers. That was a nice place we went to, fair play. I think that was on the ALR me and BT did, and my memory tells me that was 2017. 5 years ago o_O I don't think I've actually been through Newcastle since then either! Oh and the other memory that I've just had was me underlining in my NREA and you practically having a fit at the idea of doing it freehand on the Metro  I still do my underlining and ticking freehand, usually once I'm back at base though. Still not very tidy, but it does the job!

The headlight on the nose of the 50 resembles a monocle.

Oh dont get me started on free hand underlining in books o_O Mr Train already ribs me and believes no-one can touch my NREA, unless you have white gloves on, like a curator passing over old documents, who's responsible for looking after the National Archives

That was a good laugh that day though Tech. Who can forget that young lady in the rather short shorts. The Fort was the pub I took you and Blind Traveller to. Lot of varied 156s and 158s these days Tech. Even some of the old Jock Rail 156s are in Northern Livery now. Yeah you'd certainly make hay with a freedom of the North Rover, with the Azumas, 195s and 331s these days bud.

I'm about 5mins walk from that shot of the HST was taken to be fair. I might try and get a shot from that spot if I can though.

That's an even better shot Mr xot and if you zoom in on the picture. Over the top.of parcel Van's you'll see a couple of 47s on the ash heaps at the back of Gsteshead shed. May even be a 40 in that pic too. Brings back memories that. Used to bunk round the back a lot especially when the breakdown train blocked a few locos numbers.

There looks to be a white roof 47 in the middle of the bunch.

Talking of 47s, I see that "Gateshead" has now left the East Lancs, so just 47765 for you to enjoy this year.

That comment about needing white gloves before touching your book made me smile quite a bit! I will have to have another look at a 50 to see if the monocle thing makes more sense but I think I can see where she's coming from.

I have to confess, I'd forgot about the woman in the shorts!

Yeah I noticed that too. The mere sight of a white roof on GD used to see us quicken our pace to see what it was. An SF 47 didnt usually stay long. Same with the Western Region ones with the low nameplate.

Thanks! I kind of see where she's coming from, but I am exhausted tonight so I will have to look again and see if it is more prominent then.

Mind you, I do fancy a bit of 50 thrash right now. That sounds like too much fun!

Let The Fun Begin
So after yonks since being out n about on the rails, Wednesday's trip starts later than expected but were in the Car making our way North West by about 11am. After a brief stop at Wetherby services for a much needed coffee and a Sarnie, we manage to arrive at base camp by half 2. After a quick dump of unneeded baggage and off to Bury Metrolink via a Taxi. We get our tickets and jump on winner 3046 for the ride to Man Vic, noting the passing trams as we go.

As we get to Man Vic theres a number of trams I add to the book of sights along with 195106 the sun is shining, so why not make hay. We make our way to Platform 4 and await our steed to Huddersfield. Dud 185136 arrives a couple down but its rammed, we clamber aboard and as expected its standing room only and it's so warm on board, I feel like an extra in Tenko (theres one for the kids to google).

Arriving at Huddersfield, it's a relief to get off 185136 and the blast of cool air when we step onto the platform, is an absolute God send. The other half nips to the shop to get cold drinks while I nip off the station for a ciggy. I return and we sit and watch the 185s pile into and out of Huddersfield. 802206 and 150211 save our soles and add a difference to proceedings before we get desiro'd to death. The other half and myself decide to wander up the platform, so I can show her the old coach and half of 144001 used for what I think, are some sort of classrooms, before wandering down to a different seat, to await the 17.18 to Man Vic.

Todays 17.18 Scarboro to Man Vic is in the hand of all round winner(sight and haulage) 68028 and a very welcome addition it is too. I do love the Moggies for haulage.
20220629_172406.jpg

We get on the 2nd coach and are hit by the aircon and plenty space. We find a table seat and enjoy the Moggy thrashing it's way towards Manchester. Even in the coffin stock you can still hear the 68 thrash it's way up the gradients and through the tunnels. If they had windows you could open, the sound would be even more glorious. Like probably so many before me, I'm glad I've now done them both ways over the Pennines, as its kind of achieved a Railway bucket list by doing so. Loco hauled over the Pennines in my younger days(no doubt many others too) was an everyday occurrence but then the 158s killed it and all seemed lost to do it ever again. Unless on a rail tour. So when these loco hauled turns were mooted, I vowed to myself, any chance I could to do them, I would grasp it with both hands. As much as I love these moggies for haulage, for me they'll still not be as good as a 47(for me to say, that's hardly a statement that'll shock you all) or a 31 was, over the Pennines. but the 68s are certainly up there. I guess it's like meeting an old friend and talking about ole times.

Arriving back in Victorious Mancunia, I stood having a bit yack with the driver, who was waiting to check the guard had got off. Admitting he'd mistakenly drove the ECS away one day and taken a guard to Longsight with him and the guard wasnt exactly chuffed about it. The guard now free from tonights turn, waved to the driver, who was eagerly waiting to go and finish his shift, jumped back in the cab and growled 68028 away to Longsight.
20220629_180044.jpg
That was our cue and we made for the tram, clicking a couple more 195s in the process. The other half wanted to ride the tram through the streets of Manchester, as she hadn't done so before. So being the gent that I am, I said no problem and after a few mins wait, in came tram 3081 which weaved us through the streets, to take us on the short trip to Pickled Mancunia, where I hoped I could add a few more 195s and 331s.

I indeed did too and after a short while of watching stuff come and go, I then decided we'd do a Stockport leap and seen as I hadnt tried a 331 for haulage, I thought now was as good a time as any to try. So when 331009 and 331022 pulled in, it was a no brainer, so we hastily jumped aboard. Both were all round winners for me. The other half laughing asked, do I need these ones, I just replied, if I need them, theres a bloody good chance you probably will. Oh that's good, I'm told. I'm not coming all this way to get duds. My god folks, shes even grasping the terminology too.

The 331s are pretty standard fare, not a patch on the Northern Starships but I've had a go. The seats seem comfy enough, which makes a change because most of them are harder than the Hobbs of hell in this new stuff now.

At Stockport theres not a great deal to get excited about but the different liveries on an EMR 158 and 156 combo to Liverpool have the other half momentarily confused before she says, is that a 156 and 158. When I say, yes they are. Shes absolutely buzzing with herself and said, the colours threw me there. In triumph she goes and gets the coffee and a double decker as an accompaniment in, before we cross the platform and await the next winners to Piccalilly. Winner 150132 and dud 150119 do the honours. On the way back I cop 769448 and a couple more 331s yoo. Happy Days.

With the two of us starting to flag, I decide to have no more than half an hour on the station, before heading back to the trams to get back to Bury. This allows me to rope in 195105 and 397010 for the book of sights before we make our way downstairs. 3071 is our chariot, as we head back towards base camp, adding more trams to the list for the day.

It's not been a bad day. 28 new sightings. Half of which were the Manchester trams, but 1 loco and 13 new units as well, certainly pleased me.

So there endeth day 1 and which set us up nicely for Part 2 and a day at the ELR Diesel Gala.

To be continued............................
