This prompted me to look at the route map of the 32, which I've never needed to use. What's the rationale of the route? Purely people commuting from North West Edinburgh and Balerno / Currie to HW and the Gyle? If so, I'm surprised there's enough to demand for that route to be viable. Or am I missing something else it's useful for?
From a Balerno prospective I've used it quite a lot.
It's certainly handy for people going to the airport as they can get the tram from Hermiston Gait.
Obviously certain times will be quiet.
It's definitely used more now than when McGills operated the service.

There are so many connections which it can be useful for, it it ever turns up!

That's correct - it's a link between areas without much in the way of retail or employment to shopping malls, various office/industrial/research sites, Edinburgh College, Heriot-Watt etc.
As you say, there isn't enough demand for that route to be viable and it receives financial support from City of Edinburgh Council because the service is perceived as socially necessary.

To be fair, for the areas I've seen them in recently (Gyle/Hermiston Gait) they pick up loads, so clearly the service does the job.

I've experienced it at standing room only before, usually it's not quite so busy and can be quite quiet at times, but it's at least fairly well used for much of the day on most of the route. Although the low seating capacity of the 7900s can potentially make it seem busier than it would seem on an Evora.

The day Lothian move on from the 7900s will be the day i sleep well, they are awkward buses with seats that have not aged well, but at the end of the day at least they are being put into good use, even if its mainly for the 32/36, although i think they would benefit more from Country work on the 70/71 if anything.

Have Lothian finally put bus stops in place for the 32 exclusive stops further into Heriott Watt? at that point i would of probably implemented a hail and ride section for the students.

Also, Happy New Year! What are we expecting from Lothian in 2026?

Happy New Year! Personally I'm wondering wether either Lothian Country or ECB will get a number of route changes in the next service changes. Also, I'm for some reason unsure if the letter suffix routes (22A and 47B) will stay as they are, or get renumbered/withdrawn. One thing I would be grateful for is night buses to the RIE again, but sadly think it might be unlikely.

I would love to see Lothian Country maybe get some more improvements, East Coast definitely had quite a year with changes in 2025.

The 22A I could maybe see getting canned, they could just reroute the 22 via South Gyle anyway surely, 47B could also just run via Bush full time and save the trouble of different variant numbers.

Really surprised they haven't given RIE another night service, I get the N7,N11,N14 weren't popular but they were possibilities for other services.

Here's a quick run down on what I think 2026 should behold for the Lothian Network, (i know some of these are farfetched suggestions but use the imagination) and in this scenario, Lothian had won the rights for Service 13/60 from McGills.

There's a perfectly valid reason for Lothian not touching the Dumbiedykes with the proverbial barge pole. It's called "there's no money to be made there."
This was the reason why the 45 was pulled from the area at deregulation in 1986, and also why the 60 has run as a tender off-and-on over the last forty years.

If it didn't pay Lothian to serve the Dumbiedykes in 1986, it definitely won't pay them now to do so.

So you add in an 5 extra buses into the network but still leave Broxburn with 40min service?

The direct one-bus link from The Pans, Musselburgh and Joppa was tried by First when footfall at Ocean Terminal was much higher and didn’t pay so I can’t see any prospect of it working in today’s economic climate. Also, what is there in Ballenceiff to sustain a commercial service?

Perhaps there is a quote that can be applied to this!

i know some of these are farfetched suggestions but use the imagination

I am well aware some of these services are tendered! Obviously.. the whole point of this was sheer speculation, obviously some ideas work and some don't, like I know dumbiedykes was a bit too ambitious, saying that if the royal mile was ever to be pedestrianised fully then the 35 would have no choice but to run via Dumbiedykes anyway.

Also, what is there in Ballenceiff to sustain a commercial service?

The same thing that's in Whitekirk or Tyninghame! A passing point to other locations :lol:

Did i? the X18 is still every 30 minutes right? maybe i could increase the X18 to every 20 minutes or make the 72 every 30 minutes!

A bus between East Lothian and Leith via Porty and Seafield would be great, as would having the Polton Mill 31s extended to Rosewell. Increasing the frequency of the 120 and 121 with later journeys would be welcome. The 45 to QMU avoiding Joppa is a new idea, and honestly might work well. Not sure Lothian would be up for routing the X40 over the old route of the 40 with how narrow it is. Frequency and connection imporvements to the 18 and 21 would also be welcome.

Glad to see some agreement in the ideas! :D

For the record for my X40 rerouting I was meaning having it follow the 70 route between Hermiston P&R and Ratho Main Street before continuing to Bonnington, not via Gogarstrone! I agree that would be a nightmare to navigate with a double decker, but i figured logically it would make sense for connections to West Lothian and also maintain the Ratio to Hermiston link!

Yes, tech it would have been lower. There is a few spare off peak to cover X27/x28 from the extra peak workings etc , but since you wanted to have extras on the x19 that would push it up overall. Making the 72 would be excellent idea.

32 reintroduced (Balerno - Granton)
Via Currie, Wester Hailes Road (omits clovenstone), South Gyle, Gyle, Maybury, Barnton, Davidson Mains, Muirhouse, Granton Square

Found this on an old forum (Lothian Buses and ECB Forum) which is no longer active, it feels very weird how i sort of predicted this back in 2019 :D

Never would i have presumed the 32 would ever hit Balerno, or extend beyond Gyle to Barnton via Maybury 7 years ago, obviously Wester Hailes Road now has the X40, just feels weird to imagine this now, but what are the odds?

Reminds me of my strange 46 prediction as well. Fair play as getting stuff right feels impossible.

Something along the lines of 'be careful what you wish for' because you never know if the bus route idea you came up with might become reality one day.

On that subject, what are some brand new bus services which folk would like to see? No matter how far fetched.

Here you are then!
NEW Service 75 - Broxburn, East Mains <> Livingston, South Railway Station via Uphall, Dechmont, Bangour (when opened), Royston Hall, Deans South, Livingston North Railway Station, St. John's Hospital, Craigshill and Livingston Bus Terminal. Every 60 minutes.

My rationale is that it gives Deans and Craigshill a direct link to Broxburn, as well as linking Craigshill back to a train station. It also provides a every 30 minute link to Livingston South, if interested with the 9.

Now this one's slightly more far out but not impossible.

NEW Service X20 - Livingston, North Railway Station <> Livingston, South Railway Station Express Shuttle via Livingston, Bus Terminal and St. John's Hospital. Every 30 minutes.

Reasoning for this is it connects the north and south of Livingston and tests out the possibility of a 'Livingston Central' station. If well publicised I believe the route in turn will be well used, could even be increased to every 15/20 minutes if proves popular.

I’m curious to see what they do with Bangour as diverting the X18 seems the obvious thing to do, but the route would need a 9th bus for this to happen. In my own opinion it probably needs this anyway, but that’s a cost to Lothian. You’d think probably next year before any chance of this happening.

I think the likelihood of a Bangour to Livingston bus seems low, but would be nice. It’s right next to the Fastlink and driving will always be the preferred option for that.

I think they might just ignore it entirely honestly, it seems like far too much of time sink, and given it's quite affluent I think at most they'd maybe make an X18a and X18b or something.

There are already bus stops located on the A89 outside the new housing development at Bangour. Can’t see any reason for diverting the X18 into there.

There is a small Duel road leading into the estate so they could put up some new bus stops on that section to stop people having to cross the road.

Does anyone actually know if there is some housing money for a new bus route? Since West Lothian council is skint I would wager that is very high possibility, that might be one of the terms of building the housing.

I would revised the following:

72: Current route from Broxburn to Whitburn - Fauldhouse
72H: Current route from Broxburn to Whitburn - Harthill Via heartlands
Both Hourly, with 30min head on common section.

No73: Revised route
No longer serve Livingston Village, it will now go from Livingston up Alderstone road - Houston road - Deans road - circular around deans north and south but no longer go past the Morrisons.

New 76: Hourly
Winchburgh - Broxburn - Uphall - Fastlink - Livingston - livingston Village - Deans road - Bangour Estate

Try to think of something original here, that i haven't suggested already above.. here we go!

52 (Balerno - Ocean Terminal)
Via Currie, Juniper Green, Colinton, Dreghorn, Swanston, Fairmilehead, Buckstone, Braids Hill, Liberton, Cameron Toll, Old Dalkeith Road, RIE, Milligan Drive, The Wisp, Fort Kinnaird, Brunstane, Eastfield, Joppa, Portobello, Craigentinny, Fillyside, Seafield, Salamander Street, The Shore
Every 60 minutes Monday - Saturday running late, and every 2 hours on Sundays.

it would interwork with this service

54 (Balerno - Ocean Terminal) [hear me out]
Via Currie, Juniper Green, Wester Hailes Road, Westside Plaza, Drumbryden Road, Longstone, Saughton Road North, Carrick Knowe, Corstorphine, St Johns Road, Clermiston Road, Blackhall, Crewe Toll, Ferry Road, North Junction Street.
Every 60 minutes Monday - Saturday running late, and every 2 hours on Sundays.

Two new cross city routes, i always prefered routes like the 18/21/32/38 so i wanted to take a shot of creating connections, this was an idea i had ages ago that i may of shared before (cant really remember), but i liked the 52 as it ticks off a few boxes that may/may not be popular.

52 Benefits
  • Connects Ocean Terminal Seafield with Portobello (might not be viable but its nice to have options)
  • Connects Portobello with Brunstane [Edinburgh College] (not really a connection anyone asked for but still handy)
  • Connects Brunstane with Fort Kinnaird
  • Provides the wisp with a regular bus service (again might not be viable but again, nice to have options and saves having to take another bus down greendykes)
  • Connects Old Dalkeith Road with Liberton Road
  • Provides a bus service for Braids Hills and connects Liberton with Buckstone (i know noone asked for this but it does have a road)
  • Connects Buckstone with Dreghorn

54 Benefits

  • Connects Balerno and Lanark Road with Wester Hailes easily
  • Gives Longstone a connection to Corstorphine
  • Provides a regular bus up Clerwood direction without having to actually run via Clermiston and Drum Brae South
  • Provides Ocean Terminal an alternative link to the west side of Edinburgh (Wester Hailes, Currie, Balerno)

In my original plan, the 54 was going to extend beyond Balerno to Livingston via Kirknewton, but i figured this way the buses could interwork easier.

In my original plan, the 54 was going to extend beyond Balerno to Livingston via Kirknewton, but i figured this way the buses could interwork easier.
What is this obsession with Ocean Terminal? It is a dead duck these days.

The 44 running at a reasonable frequency is adequate for Balerno and Currie and connections can be made at Gillespie Crossroads and the city centre to the numerous destinations that you’ve mentioned.

I wouldn't say it was an obsession per-say, it's more of a convenience terminus point for connections, plus Ocean Terminal is expanding more and more with the bowling alley incoming and it has the cinema and restaurants, it's still got some merit.

Yeah i understand that, but.. as it was stated earlier up.
On that subject, what are some brand new bus services which folk would like to see? No matter how far fetched.
So... yeah, let the guy say his ideas and not stomp on em! :D

Besides, read the benefits i say above, you can't connect Balerno directly with Dreghorn or Fairmilehead, yes you can swap over with other services but the idea is one direct journey without the need to swap over, it's meant to be a handy cross city service!
