Following negative stories in the press about the transport system in Edinburgh over August, i have a few thoughts.
Even the rest of the year, the bottleneck where the tram goes into St Andrew Square from Princes Street is a bad one.
The most suitable changes in my opinion would be:
Alter traffic signals in favour of buses.
Tighter moderation of the area outside The Balmoral, with heavy fines introduced. Waverley Bridge could contain a large Taxi Rank.
Airlink - West End, Princes Street, Frederick Street, George Street, Mound, Waverley Bridge
Tours - North St Andrew Square
Green Arrow - Lothian Road, Charlotte Square, George Street (Terminus), then loop back around St Andrew Square with a stop on the southside.
Lothian Country (inc. 43) - Running (Princes Street) West to East terminating on Regent Road or running via George Street terminating on the North Side of St Andrew Square.
East Coast - Running (Princes Street) East to West terminating at their current terminal points.
Any public services serving the Bus station using George Street. With First using Princes Street.
Private coaches, cars and private hire cars completely banned from Princes Street - with a hefty penalty charge in place for coaches. Keep Princes Street for local and commuter services, long distance services such as Megabus, City Link etc could use George Street or Queen Street.
All festival related events should be kept on the southside of Princes Street.
This could be a good start to start to ease congestion. I think serious planning needs to go into a proper solution, people from all main operators and police need to be involved. If only Transport for Edinburgh had been a successful venture, if it had more power of what happens and how the city roads run. This would be the exact thing they'd be in charge of.
